locale: ä,ö,ü

hello!

i have a little problem with the locale settings. i use the en_US.UTF8 locale. all is working perfect - console and programs. i can use ä,ö,ü. but my eterm terminal shows me "???" instead of "äöü". a "ls" command shows me questions marks, but when i use a command like "rm" and press the tab-key twice to show all possibilities, it shows me the correct filename. what is that? plz help

I have same problem as you. Some programs wor correct other no. I don't know what is wrong: i n Konqueror I have different fonts that I could see same as with different fonts in Firefox, Amarok has different fonts for same code page as KMail...

Is this a problem with console fonts? I had a similar problem to do with the UK currency symbol (£), and in the end it was something to do with console fonts. This was about a year ago, so I'm afraid I can't give any more detail than that, but console fonts is where I would start looking.

I use Bitstream Vera Sans Mono (size 6-8) for my term font. The Bitstream fonts have a wide range of characters, both English and otherwise, and don't look bad (when you turn off antialiasing for your teminal).

I'm having the same problem since last update to glibc I think, my problem is with KDE apps like Konsole, KEdit, Kate, etc...

Still no solution, and I'm using Bitstream Vera Sans and Bitstream Vera Mono for almost all things... I've tried with ISO8859-1 and UTF8, bad characters change but the problem remains.

PS: This is the third, fourth thread about this problem, I insist that this is some kind of bug.

Make sure you have the dash:

en_US.UTF-8

Could you, please send how your locale.gen looks like?

I have en_US.UTF but I have many problems with fonts in KDE.

Hey for KDE apps, you are setting the fonts in the KDE control centre, right? Under Appearance & Themes->Fonts? Also, do you have your KDE locale specified under the KDE control centre Regional & Accessibility->Country/Region & Language?

Yes, I have. I have USA and Languahe is English. For fonts I have DejaVu Sans. And what is a problem? When I suring with Konqueror, for example www.debian.org, I need to choose in the Konqueror settings-Fonts-Sans Serif If I want to see Chinese, cyrilic fonts otherwise I see squares. BTW with Firefox I don't have a problem. Sites with code age iso-8860-2, www.delo.si Konqueror shows correct but Amarok doesn't. Amarok doesn't shows correct also with Sans Serif but shows correct with Luxi Sans. On the distrowatch.com and if you choose Arch Linux there were something in Japanese fonts which Konqueror did show me squares but Firefox shows jap. letters...and there are many other "problems". Also on the Arch forum show me for example for member MooCrumpus square against ":". I am not sure if those problem starting with KDE 3.5.2 or with new glibc.

In my case I'm using es_VE.UTF-8 in rc.conf and uncommented in locale.gen. As I've said I'm using Bitstream Vera Sans and Bitstream Vera Mono in KDE, selected in Control Center, same with Firefox, problem is intermittent, with some apps and some web pages happens and some not. But this started after last glibc update, when I generated manually my locales, before never saw this, at least that I remember.

Some terminals don't support UTF8 as well, just so no one assumes it will work in every term.

Bloody hell, this is a confusing one... umm... do you have MS core fonts installed? Sometimes problems can arise from KDE config files... if you're willing to have a complete stab-in-the-dark attempt, perhaps you could try deleting ~/.kde (back it up first in case it doesn't fix anything so you can get your old settings back)

Yes, I have also MS fonts and I did try almost all fonts and result is the same.As RalX wrote problem start after glibc update. Before I never had a problem.

I forgot to write: ten days ago when I installed Debian - testing I had the same problem with fonts under KDE and Debian Etch has the same version of glibc.

Interesting, if this is happening in another distro, like Debian, then definitely it's a problem of glibc or KDE, i'll try installing Gnome in order to prove if it happens too.

My results:

I tested with the same file all this apps.

In Gnome Terminal and Konsole (using "nano", "less" and "cat"), and in Kate and KEdit I can't see "á", "é", "í", "ó", "ú", "ñ".

Only in GEdit and Open Office (in both KDE and Gnome) I can see all those letters correctly in that file.

This is using UTF-8, if I choose ISO8859-1 then this files looks ok in all those apps but then others files (I suppose UTF encoded files) looks wrong.

So, I still don't know where is the problem.

PS: Anyone know why OpenOffice toolbar appears and disappear when I move mouse over it under Gnome??

Another thing, is it normal that when I run "locale" it returns all variables ritght except "LC_ALL= " doesn't have anything

I read somewhere that problem are in QTllibraries and with qt 4 works okay (KDE).
