I put them in /etc/fonts/conf.d/99-tt-courier-prime.conf, and ran fc-cache -f. Restarted the browser, but no effect. Still look the same.

a. added the 1st two repos, b. installed the bundle, c. absosmurfly unclear on how to configure/use this (font rendering looks the same to me), d. removed entire thing.

So, check yourself that the rules are actually taking effect - then tweak them.

To prove that the rules take effect, I like to use:

<edit mode="assign" name="antialias"><bool>false</bool></edit>

... because that is usually the most noticeable change (making the font look horrible).

the site you mentioned uses monospace fonts
so you need to check for "monospace" font family in your .conf files.

For example I use Cousine for monospace and this is how it looks:

I tried that. The webpage looks the same. Maybe the settings aren't taking effect.
I only changed them in 99-tt-courier-prime.conf, and ran fc-cache -f. Restarted just the browser. Maybe a full restart is needed.

FWIW, I think that other fonts are a bit off as well, but monospace looks bad to even my untrained eyes.

Can you share the list with sym-links in /etc/fonts/conf.d ?
Maybe there is a problem with "selective-rendering" for specific fonts

It also would be nice if you execute this commands in a new terminal session :
"fc-cache -vr && sudo fc-cache -vr"
when you run fc-cache under root the program will work with system cache in /var/cache/fontconfig/

so at first the browser will use alias for courier, and then for monospace fonts.

Liberation mono seems fine on that site, and Courier prime seems fine on this (Arch forum) site. I think we can safely conclude that it is a website specific issue as ixi pointed out? Courier Prime on python.org seems to be problematic. I can probably request people to visit the site and check the same.

Try to reset its settings.
Even if mkv contain subtitles, I'm sure that it does not contain font rendering settings

because it is my problem. if the mkv have, for example, the Arial font embeded, fontconfig-infinality change it with a free font counterpart instead of use the embeded font

this is not the problem of player (mpv in this case, which uses libass for render the subtitle, which uses fontconfig for select the font use in that subtitle, as mplayer, mplayer2, etc), is problem of the fontconfig-infinality because is not possible disable all font substitution (set fc-presets to none)

I could be wrong, but mkv "knows" what to show you, but it does not have any fonts or font settings.
Have you tried smplayer? it's a gui for mplayer with nice interface settings

it is not necessary, because is not problem of the player/gui

as i said, libass (Advanced Substation Apha (.ass) subtitle rendering library used by mpv, mplayer2, mplayer, etc) calls fontconfig for select what font is need each line of subtitle(can handle each letter with each font individuality).
if libass say need Arial(included in the mkv as embedded attachment), and fontconfig have that font replaced to other(dejavu for example), libass render the replaced font(dejavu)

a good fix is can disable all font substitution with fc-presets. because manual intervention (remove that sustitution) can lead fontconfig-infinality malfunction

I'm not sure it is possible, all I can suggest is to make your own config file, for example 99-arial-alias.conf.
Put this strings there and see the result:

When something will call for Arial font family the Arimo font will be used.
It will affect the whole system, but you will know is it a specific font problem or it is a rendering problem.

The only sense in which this is true, is that mkv does not "have" a subtitle format.

Otherwise -- SSA / ASS subtitles, which is one of the types mkv supports, may indeed contain fonts, and frequently do. Most fansubs I've seen use a font selected specifically for that series. This is not obligatory (a font may be requested just by name + size, alternatively), but it is common.

Just a word of thanks for the infinality bundle. I rescued an ancient laptop (HP dx1000) and put Arch on it to get the fastest performance I could (LXDE desktop) but the fonts were hurting my eyes. All better now.
