whenever I try logout, the system just hangs.... I'm forced to kill the logout window which takes me back to gnome. The same thing happens when trying to shutdown from gnome.
any suggestions?

drop it, and build fresh gnome from garnome.
latest gnome and it dependent libraries all in one.
http://www.gnome.org/projects/garnome/Note, It take much time, my case, 5~6 hours(512, p2.4, include error-ack-retype-command time ).
When it done, it built on /home/<user>/garnome automatically.Of course you can change the dir(README, vi +43 gar.conf.mk).
PS: next time, if i install arch again, then i will try console-arch(really minimalistic base) + xorg + garnome.
/dev/hda1{(/:arch, installed from default cdrom, would like to chmod -R 500 / ;-) ) + (/home/user:xorg,garnome,every other custom software, from internet tarballs )} + /dev/hda2{RIP: for arch glibc-overwrite}
xorg is X11, so it user-space software.

1. in gnome-terminal,
sudo rebootsudo halt2.

sometimes when the system freeze when I logout from gnome.
but you can use ctrl+alt+del to force the gdm to restart

Both suggestions are valid, but not practial. There is a reason we have a logout button, this button should work. I'm sure there is a way to fix this.
we cannot just kill the xserver everytime we logout!
