trouble completely shutting down halts at Reboot: Power down

Hi All,

I have tried all commands I can think of to shut down a linux pc via a terminal.

poweroff, systemctl poweroff shutdown -h now, init 0 etc all of which end up with a black screen displaying [ number ] Reboot: Power down.

I would like to be able to shutdown the pc without having to hold the power button down each time after the above message is displayed.

This is what my screen shows

I have checked the PSU connectors and all are plugged in correctly, and i'm not sure it will make any difference but I am dual booting with windows.

For details of my hardware inxi -Fx returned the following Hardware Data

I should also mention that restart or reboot works fine without a problem it's only when trying to shutdown that it doesn't shutdown properly.

Maybe it has something to do with the kernel and my psu not communicating properly? but all the physical connections look in place correctly.

Have you got the shutdown hook in your mkinitcpio.conf?

Hi jasonwryan,

My configuration doesn't appear to have a shutdown hook.

HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck"

mkinitcpio.conf file

Can you confirm is it the correct order to add the shutdown hook at the end of the hooks line and then restart and run mkinitcpio -p.

I did this and now the machine just restarts instead of turning of with the sudo power off command?

No, it is no longer necessary: I was just curious if it was there.

Re: trouble completely shutting down halts at Reboot: Power down

Ok good to know, any idea then what caused the system to restart instead of shutdown when I run commands such as sudo poweroff or shutdown -h now?

All I did was add the shutdown hook at the end of the file, save it, run mkinitcpio -p restart (notice no change to shutdown behaviour) then change it back (by removing the shutdown hook) and now it suddenly restarts instead of go to Reboot: Power down.

No. But there are quite a few threads here where people have the same issue.
