Hi,
Since a few days, I have a lot of core dump with Firefox and VLC. The error is :
VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80)
[000000000253d148] core libvlc: Lancement de vlc avec l'interface par défaut. Utilisez « cvlc » pour démarrer VLC sans interface.
vlc: res_query.c :262 : __libc_res_nquery: l'assertion « (hp != NULL) && (hp2 != NULL) » a échoué.
[1] 3666 abort (core dumped) vlc
With Firefox :
firefox: res_query.c :262 : __libc_res_nquery: l'assertion « (hp != NULL) && (hp2 != NULL) » a échoué.
[1] 4283 abort (core dumped) firefox
It happens only on a few site (for example http://typematrix.com/bepo/) and with a few videos for VLC. When I go offline I don't have any problem with VLC, so it seems to confirm a problem with glibc with DNS requests I saw on Internet…

I tried Firefox beta with no success. I tried to rollback my glibc with no success too… I'm out of ideas right now… :-(
Thanks a lot,

Tried the weblink in firefox and got to the typematrix/bepo page with no problem.
Without an example site that was problematic in vlc, I can't try to replicate any issues with that - sorry.
So, I won't be able to offer much help beyond providing troubleshooting ideas I'm afraid, but it seems to be unique to you (or at least people with the same combination of binaries/config as you) rather than either ff or your glibc specifically.
The fact that it only happens on certain sites and is tied to rendering (video/fonts) would make me look at my video driver (and settings) and my ff plugins/addons (and settings) though.
In any event, given recent news, I wouldn't roll back my glibc, if I were you - not until I'd ascertained that that really was the root cause of the problem.

Hi,
I already tried with Firefox and no addons. It only appears with VLC if I have an internet connection. I can try a video with Internet it crashs, without everything is fine… (same result with an ethernet connection or wifi).
The only difference with your system is the 64bits architecture… :-(
Thank you for your time,
Thibaud

Don't have access to a 64bit system right now - and probably won't have for a couple of months either * - so any further troubleshooting on my part would be kinda pointless, as I won't be able to replicate the platform (and that's pretty significant when troubleshooting)..
Sorry
On the plus side, at least you know it might be worthwhile looking into 64bit related issues specifically.
* I'm not even in the country right now, never mind not at home

I can't reproduce both issues on my 64-bit system.
What kind of videos don't work? Audio, video, subtitle and container format and special format extensions/configurations would be interesting. You might provide a sample file.

Thanks Scimmia!
For me so, the programs Firefox and transmission-qt, transmission-gtk are all crashing with the same error due to glibc as reported above.
Firefox 44.0.2-1
transmission-qt 2.84-2
transmission-gtk 2.84-2
glibc:
glibc 2.23-1
lib32-glibc 2.23-1
For me the problem is confined to x86_64 system, since no crash on my i686 system?

Have you tried a different DNS server?
Online
I'm not on my 64bit workstation till Monday so I could not try it till then...

Hi!
Found the problem!!!
I have IPv6 DNS and no IPv6 connection.
VLC with the same video:
I tried without IPv6 DNS and without IPv6 connection it works.
I tried with IPv6 DNS and with IPv6 connection it works.
I tried with IPv6 DNS and without IPv6 connection it crashs.
I also tried with some previously crashing websites and it seems to be fix.
It seems to be solved.
Thanks a lot Allan for your tip!

Good job! And thanks Allan indeed!
I can't confirm it's working yet for me though but it seems plausible.
How come this thing happens all of a sudden when it was working fine until now?

After latest upgrade I can't run vlc too. On my computer is segfaulting. :-( Have x86_64 system.
Looks like packge problem - downgrade to vlc-2.2.2-1 solve problem and vlc is working.

I'm on my 64bit Arch Linux workstation again.
And...
It's working again without any crashes! I've done nothing this day for that (no upgrade) but it's working again.
I'm confused: firefox, transmission were crashing but it may be due to my ISP after all?
