[solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Hi

I was starting to work on my Arch PC when suddenly the computer crashed. The screen got a little bit brighter and everything froze.
After reboot, the system crashed again starting X. After boot, I see a dash on the top of the screen and after a while the screen goes off and I can't even ping the PC.

So, I managed to boot in rescue mode and disabled sddm and reboot. The system booted to the terminal and I tried to update the system with a pacman -Syu. After that, I tried to start the SDDM service with systemctl start sddm and the system crashed again.

Then I started the read the logs... And found some weird things...

And the list goes on with a lot of directories. However I still have around 31G left on the /home partition!

After all these lines regarding KDE Ballo File Indexer:

I really need help here! And I hope it is not a hardware problem... sad

Thanks in advance.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

UPDATE

So I decided to try removing nvidia driver and install nouveau instead. The problem with SDDM <b>persists</b>. However, I was able to run that twm X with xterm and xclock.

Then I decided to try Docbroke's tip again... And typed startx /usr/bin/startkde
And KDE started but I'm getting a black screen with the mouse pointer over it. Then I see 3 windows from Plasma saying the plasma application has crashed and nothing more. CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + DEL ended the X session and I went back to the terminal.

I don't know what's going on with KDE, I always used it and I *loved* it... Now it seems to be just a buggy annoying thing.

I also tried to create a new user and start KDE on that new account but it also failed.

Here is the backtrace I got from the kcrash window:

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

well I won't be surprised if there is bug in kde plasma, have you tried any other DE, (I would suggest xfce4 or if you feel adventurous openbox/awesome/i3), if that works, it is mostly kde bug.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Thanks Docbroke!

I tried Gnome but I remember that once I run into troubles with it and it's still not working. It gives a screen saying that an error occurred and asks to log out.

But I remember the good old LXDE and it is working fine! I tried some programs, videos, and all seems to work fine... Just World of Warcraft failed to load due to driver issues but that's a problem for later.

I believe it also might be some file that went corrupted as it happened in such a weird way. I've been using KDE for the last days without any problems.

Anyway, I still need to have KDE working. So, any idea on how to workaround my problem is very welcome! smile

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Try deleting /var/tmp/kdecache-<user> and also test if lxqt is also crashing this might be some problem with Qt since plasma and sddm aren't working.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Thanks LC

Deleting the specified directory did not work. I installed LXQt and it works as well as LXDE.

But now the mystery grows... o.O
I installed back the nvidia driver and nothing works at all. It seems I'm only getting LXDE and LXQt to work with the nouveau driver...
Even KDE gives something with this driver, although plasma is crashing.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

how does your system hang? i face a strange bug currently which was not there hours ago. i went away, put the system in standby and came back and now the plasma interface hangs clock stops ticking and i can't access the taskbar. however i can start programs with krunner. reboot did not help and i wonder if it's software or hardware (installed a brand new SSD 2 days ago)
i have no crashes but the half interface is just unresponsive. weird

@cmmps
try deleting ~/.cache and run KDE/Plasma desktop again.

@macstar3000
are you also on nvidia?

@Loose_Control

yes nvidia gforce gtx 750 running the latest 361.28 proprietary driver.
i just tried to press strg+v in vivaldi browser and it made vivaldi unresponsive. very weird.

if you need more system specs let me know. i keep following this thread. oh yes i am on sddm btw.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Hi Macstar... In my case the system hangs and froze completely. It becomes unresponsive and even the network seems to go down as I can't ping it from my mac pc.

LC, the error also happened in a new fresh user I created... Even so I tried to delete the .cache directory but KDE still shows the plasma crashes with the xf86-video-nouveau driver.

Anyway, I'm starting to believe that the initial problem might be related to the proprietary nvidia driver! When I disable nouveau and enable nvidia, the froze happens with any other DE (LXDE, LXQT, ...)
When I try to start anyone of them the system crashes and froze.

Now, the problem is that the nouveau driver doesn't give me all I need, including opengl... The performance is low and, for instance, my favourite game world of warcraft doesn't run with it. Anyway, with or without it, I need KDE... sad

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

@cmmps

seems like we are in the same boat. KDE and nvidia proprietary are needed for me too, i don't want to make compromises in that regard.
deleting the cache did not help for me. reading your problems looks like i am off a little bit better as i can kinda work arround the problem however it is not great too.
i have a second test account and loging in there works without any problem. i am out of ideas. on my default accout plasmashell also runs high on cpu usage, arround 17% ...

frustrating!

Yes it is... sad

And it happened suddenly... it was working fine and then... bang! sad

BTW: Even with the nouveau driver, sddm also crashes and freezes.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

@cmmps

i wonder if switching to lightdm could solve the problem? was running antergos a few months ago before i switched to arch and had no issues there. since i am auto logging in i don't care about the login manager anyway.

Update: switching the display manager did not help. lightdm failed to login at all, and lxdm did login but the issue on plasma remained.
so i thought i give it a try and switch from nvidia to nouveau. to make it easier i used the switcher script provided in the arch wiki.
sadly i can't remember the exact output because i did not think it would  be relevant in any case but afaik it did only uninstall one lib32* package.
i did a reboot and found the desktop working perfectly again. now i haven't used the free driver since ages and thought wow it has progressed heavily because all of my fancy desktop effects were still there.
opened konsole and:

[~] lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use'                         7:25:27
        Kernel driver in use: nvidia

tried to start nvidia x server settings and that one opened fine as well. looks like one of the lib32 packages was the culprit but how could i know this before?

to be very sure, i will now switch back to sddm do several reboots and see if it's fixed now or not. i hope it is but you never know.

edit: yep, everything is back to normal. i had to reinstall steam (do you guys use steam?) as it seemed to be broken but now after 5 reboots i feel save to say, problem solved!
would be interesting if my unconventional problem solving approach (it was more of a try) would work for anyone else (i did not modify anything in the gpu switching script, used it as it was provided) too as this would hint to a more general problem or if it was very system specific.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Xorg logs people, do you do anything like exporting __GL_THREADED_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 globally (which is a very discouraged thing to do) ?

@cmmps the randomness of the crashes makes me believe this might be a microcode issue, what's your processor? If it is a pre Skylake i-Series processor you should do the microcode update, there are a few hints in your logs that a few of your partitions might be full, which can lead to the same behaviour .  can you post an untruncated

sudo journalctl -b

on trying to reproduce the error?

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

@macstar3000
Hum... I will give it a try after lunch smile I did some of the operations that script does manually but I didn't remove the lib32 package... However, it's damn weird.

@V1del
The problem is not random. It happened suddenly the first time and then it doesn't work at all - nvidia driver and/or sddm with both nvidia or nouveau.
And I already posted my hardware info... the processor is an AMD FX-6100. (is on the first post). I also have logs there. smile

Thanks!

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Well... no good... and I'm stuck also with a libgl problem - mesa-libgl conflicts with nvidia-libgl which is set as a dependency of several other packages.
lib32-nvidia-libgl package is also a dependency for other lib32-* stuff I need, so change them to mesa-libgl seems to be a pain in the....

BTW. I also tried this workaround:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … X_shutdown

And another crazy thing... yet, with nvidia driver loaded, I tried to start the gdm service... and the computer just went crazy with the screen flickering... It was hard to login on another tty and reboot the system.

So... I'm starting to be out of ideas...
At this moment I don't care to give a try on other DEs rather than KDE but I need OpenGL... And to use the Nouveau driver, I will need to install mesa-libgl...
Reinstall the system... Gosh, I have this system up for 4 years with a lot of software installed and configured... It would be another pain in the ... but...

Ideas? :S

@cmmps

can you please be a little bit more precise about your libgl conflicts? do you have the nvidia-libgl or mesa-libgl driver currently installed? because i had mesa and removed it and switched to nvidia.

Re: [solved but not nvidia] System hangs starting X (SDDM / KDE Plasma 5)

Sure... Currently I still have the nvidia-libgl package installed. I can't remove it without having problems with dependencies and I can't install the package mesa-libgl without having a conflict with the nvidia-libgl package...

@cmmps

do you use a GUI tool for your packages? for me octopi, which i am using, shows the programs which depending on the file and offers the option to remove them as well.
i would try this, remove nvidia-libgl with the dependant packages (if not too many) and reinstall again, when you chose the programs one or more should pull nvidia-libgl automatically.

@macstar3000

I always use pacman... And to remove nvidia-libgl with the dependant packages, I would be re-installing a lot of applications... It's a list of 700+ packages... smile

@cmmps

wow. that would be too much indeed. i am a bit out of ideas now, but i suggest you to stay away from a reinstall atm if you say your system is over 4 years old and you put so much effort in it.
if i get another idea i will let you know and maybe someone else can assist in the meantime.

stupid idea but tried to create a new user account and login there and see if this works?
another one would be trying to downgrade nvidia via pacman
