AMD FGLRX problems, X wont start

Have 4x AMD 290X cards, specifically the Sapphire Vapor-X 8GB models. Couldn't get them working in Ubuntu so I tried Arch.

I've followed the wiki and got to the point where it gets stuck on a black screen on boot. I open a TTY and run startx, it crashes.

I set nomodeset boot option and did various aticonfig --initial options, as well as manual edits to xorg.conf.
