I upgraded a few days ago to plasma 5 and when I leave alone the laptop, I just stuck because when I press anything it only shows for just a blink the image that is awakening and then the screen goes completely black and just refuses to show anything. I cant even go to a virtual terminal (tty) as the screen remains black, (although it seems that pressing ctrl+alt+F2 and then ctrl+alt+del reboots)
I am very disappointed

No, unfortunately [esc] does not work. Things have got a lot better after some updates but problem is not completely gone. What does work is pulling the monitor down so the laptop goes to real sleep, then pushing the monitor up again wakes the laptop again, this time for real.
