Xorg7 doesnt start

Hello,

I have a problem with my videocard. I have the next card (output of lspci):
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. S3 Unichrome Pro VGA Adapter (rev 02)
So I have to use a driver in xorg.conf. Heres the deal: "vesa" works kind of OK, but is far too slow for video or anything.
So I want to use the "via" driver... (xf86-video-via). When I startx, I get the next error:
(EE) VIA(0): Unknown Card-Ids (14FF|314), report this to the driver maintainer ASAP
Warning: Failed to open catalog, using default messages
So what should I do now?

Which version of xf86-video-via do you use? The support for via cards is not so god.

no its not so good...
just the latest, through pacman.
I also tried xf86-video-unichrome, and I compiled openchrome through the PKGBUILD on aur.archlinux.org... this last resulted in exactly the same error as described here...

erm--- your using the vesa driver, not via or unichrome....
you need to put the corresponding driver name where vesa is now..

Yes I know that, but since the via drivers do not work, it is set to "vesa" (otherwise I do not get a screen)...

another question: how do I find out the exact chipset of my integrated graphix card? lspci only lists

but the via arena website (where you can download drivers) gives a whole bunch of different chipsets: CLE266, CN700, CX700, K8M800/K8N800, KN400 & KM400, P4M800/CE/Pro, PM880, PM800, CN400, PN880, VN800, S3 ProSavage integrated graphics (PL133/T, KL133/A & KM133/A series), S3 Pro SavageDDR integrated graphics (KM/KN/PM/P4M/P4N266)

How do I know which one is in my system?

I found that out in dmesg:
agpgart: Detected VIA PM800/PN800/PM880/PN880 chipset
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xe8000000

But I still cant get this video driver to work... any ideas?

back your old config up and do X -configure, X wont configure my pci card until after I have nvidia drivers installed, so it should pick up your card, as they are quite common...

doesnt make a difference. X -configure does recognize my card as a via, but then I get the same error (unknown card-Ids 14ff|314)...

if you can localize the problem with this information I am very impressed. But I think we have to focus on the fact that the Via driver does not recognize my card for some reason... even though it really is a Via card...

You could try to build the current 0.2.5 version of the unichrome driver. See the website above and have a look at /var/abs/x11-drivers/xf86-video-unichrome/PKGBUILD.
And get in touch with the driver people.

byte: hmm ok, I didnt find that out yet. My card is simply not supported in the current xf86-video-unichrome/via/openchrome... that kinda sucks... Just have to wait or contact the developer...

user: I tried to install/compile the code from the source, but the instructions are for fedora core 4. I seem to get stuck at the xorg sources... I use xorg7, and it needs a full source tree of xorg, placed in /usr/src/xc... dont know how to get that in modular xorg...

hmm, I installed the latest xf86-video-unichrome, and it just tells me: the VT3118 chip is not supported. plain and simple, without unknown cards or anything.

secondly: I tried to install the x sources, and compile the driver, but it doesnt work. there are so many errors... Ill try and work on this one for a while...

ok, I got my videocard working properly by using the latest openchrome driver, and adding
Option "VBEModes" to my device section in xorg.conf.
if anybody encounters the same error, hopefully he will find this post...
