In nvidia-settings I get a reading of 66 degrees C. This seems high to me. I'm wondering if it's accurate or overestimated. I'm interested to hear your
- temperature according to nvidia-settings
-driver version
-and whether you think it's reporting higher than it should based on knowledge of your hardware

mine's at 44. though I havnt even touched anything remotely gl for a few days, and i've got a kickass cooling setup going.
driver is 8178 from extra.
graphics cards do, and can safely run at much higher temperatures than CPU's do, so I wouldnt be too concerned.

I can't find any termperature in nvidia-settings... Maybe my card is too old to support it so nvidia-settings have nothing to show? I have a nvidia geforce2 mx with the drivers from current.

I've got 48 degrees C...there's also the little bar graph, and it's at the lowest, so I'd say there's a lot of headroom there. Probably nothing to worry about.
Offline
Mine says 34 degrees Centigrade, and no bars showing on the bar graph.

I'm at 58C with the card in the worst possible PCIe slot for air movement I haven't done anything GL in a while though either.

Nvidia 6800Gt here.
Core Temp : 64 C
Ambient Temp: 44 C
After playing Quake4 or so for hours, the Core Temp goes up to 80 C or more.
But this doesn´t matter the new cardcores can go up to 130 C

Where do you find that temperature in nvidia-settings?
Or any other file?

I don't know about nvidia-settings, can't find the temperature reading there - I use nvclock (in extra) to check the temp.

I know my Ti4200 has a temp sensor, but I can't find anything to read it in Linux. Under windows a couple years ago it was 48C under normal speeds, when overclocked it maxed out around 72C.

what card do you have? 6800gt can run on stock cooling around and above 70 degrees, which is "normal". Apparently 7xxx run cooler. 66 deg is pretty normal for a 6800 series

I have a BFG 6600GT, it runs at 70 when idle. BFG themselves told me this was normal and not to worry.
One time I was having probs with the card, my pc was resetting itself everytime i used OpenGL. I got the thermal monitor up and left glxgears running. Within about 40 seconds the card had run itself up to about 110. I contacted BFG and arranged for a replacement, then I found that the fan and heatsinks on the card were covered in dirt and dust (lots of it). I cleaned it up and I have never had a problem since.

I don't know if the Linux driver has it aswell, but in Windows you can see a critical temperature value in the nVidia driver. It's at 135C for my 6800GT and it can't be changed.
VGA's generally get a lot hotter than CPU's.
