User app rendering whole system unusable, VT not accessible to kill it

Sometimes firefox causes such extreme load (on my mobile i7 CPU..what) that the system becomes more and more unresponsive very quickly, mouse cursor starts skipping, to a point where each action, such as keypress to switch to VT to kill firefox, takes like a minute or several minutes. X will be totally useless at that point in terms of reaction, so my last hope is to kill firefox from VT. The problem here is that in the VT I cannot login anymore to issue a kill command, because between the VT registering me entering name and entering password more than a minute will pass so the login prompt actually times out (!)
Now I think there is some **bad** problem there if some random user-app can shut down the whole system like that, is there a way to fix it so that you can ALWAYS enter a VT and kill an app if it causes trouble?
