Hi All,
First of all I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place and I have to say that this is my first time using Arch.
I installed Arch as per instructions in Wiki. Most things are fine but the one issue I have is that I cannot use Gnome/Gnome classic or Cinnamon (inc. software rendered). All I can use is Gnome on Wayland.
When I try logging into one of the above (except Wayland) from GDM I get a blank screen with standard GDM speckled dark background and that is it. I am then unable to get a tty up with CTRL+ALT+[1-7] and nothing happens.
I am not sure if it related but the first entry on the screen after the grub disapears is regarding a failure of systemd-modules-load.service but the very next entry flushed the journal so I cannot get an error from it. If I do run
systemctl status systemd-modules-load.serviceI get
!514 $ systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service
● systemd-modules-load.service - Load Kernel Modules

Docs: man:systemd-modules-load.service(8)

Process: 182 ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Main PID: 182 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Warning: Journal has been rotated since unit was started. Log output is incomplete or unavailable.Like I said: I am not sure if this has anything to do with my x problems or not.
I wouldn't mind just sticking with Wayland but there are several applications that seem to have an issue with placement of their windows/overlays.
Any help would be appreciated. What logs etc can I provide in order to help you. Sorry for the lack of information but after many hours of trying to solve this I'm shattered and everything I try seems to go going round in circles and I keep trying the same things. I have a few more things to try tonight but in case they fail I shall post this now.
EDIT: additional information
I do not have an xorg.conf and the xorg.conf.d? directory is empty.
I have tried a few things since I wrote this thread and at some point a log entry has ben created

I do have Ubuntu on another partition on the same drive but the X11 structure is quite different. I have copied the entire directory anyway...I know it's a bad idea but I am going to get rid of x and re-install it so that should take care of any differences.
Thanks in advance,

I told you I was shattered last night. I now remember getting x working but it wouldn't let me log in. I tried as my own user and as root but even though I know the username/password combo was correct for both it just kept going back to the login screen.
I am however able to open up a tty and run
sudo systemctl start gdmso at least I can get back into a visual mode.

gdm presents you a graphical screen? So your drivers work fine?

Before you created an Xorg.conf X worked fine according to the log:
[ 183.880] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.Remove the Xorg.conf that you created. Then follow this page to try create an xinitrc and try starting X with startx.

I am not sure if it related but the first entry on the screen after the grub disapears is regarding a failure of systemd-modules-load.service but the very next entry flushed the journal so I cannot get an error from it.
try journalctl | grep systemd-modules

What GPU do you have?
Did you install xf86-video-ati ?

Hi Guys (excuse sex),
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. A mixture of an Open University assignment and lack of sleep have kept me from here.
I managed to solve it eventually (but before Tetris11 replied). I am not exactly sure what was causing it. Looking back at my history it seems pretty much to coincide with my memory. I enabled gdm and the last entry in my history before I started on my assignment was
sudo pacman -S xorg-driversI will still go through the replies and see if anything was relevant but at the minute I need to lay down (I'm also suffering from complications post-spinal surgery so can't stay sat up for too long).
Thanks for your help everybody. If I see any replies that would have been relevant I'll create another reply.
