I'm trying to achieve native, transparent NTFS write support like Knoppix 5.0 features, however, when I mount the NTFS partition rw then try to write a directory (both as root) I receive "operation not permitted" notifications. I checked with the kernel source via menuconfig and NTFS write support is apparently enabled (note i'm running on the stock 2.6.15 kernel from the repositories). What should I do? Should I recompile the kernel anyway or is there a permission set that needs to be changed? Have any other archers achieved this? Thanks.

The kernel ntfs write support is not really useful yet. It cannot create files or delete them.
To get working write support (like Knoppix has), do the following: Install the "ntfsprogs" package, then mount your partition either by specifying the filesystem type "ntfs-fuse" or by using the "ntfsmount" utility.

I'm currently running the latest (FUSE based) static build of captive-ntfs, which works, but has many issues (most serious one is that the deleted files remain in memory, so you can remove just a few at a time).
I wouldn't trust it for anything else than recovery purposes, and ceratinly not for everyday use.

If you're depending on being able to write to a wintendo-disk, I'd just convert it to FAT32 or something. It's not a good filesystem ,but atleast you can be sure that you can both read and write to it without any trouble. Just my 2 cents.

I mounted with the ntfs-fuse FS and read/write appears to be working, however, write speed is limited to only 1 MB/s and has dwindled down to about 440KB/s during write, almost like it's pre-DMA. And the process 'mount.ntfs-fuse' is using 97% of the CPU. I can probably deal with this considering the sparse frequency in which i send huge files over, but does anyone have any suggestons on improving performance?

Most likely you will have to wait until the kernel driver has improved. ntfs-fuse is much slower than the kernel driver.

Heh, funny thing, I'm the one who submitted that article to Digg ( http://digg.com/linux_unix/How_to_achie … nder_Linux ) The coral cache that links to is dead, the original link was posted above by Brain0 ( http://wiki.linux-ntfs.org/doku.php?id=ntfsmount ) Glad to see Archers on Digg. I have been using drivers on the windows side to allow windows to read and write from ext3 and ext2 partitions on my main computer. Forgot the link will get back to you with it.

Yer that the best way by far ext3 in
windows. Works really well ill find a link to the driver when i install firefox.
