Hard system freeze on USB i/o error

Copying some files, 0.5 to 1 GB each, to external USB 3 disk, then rsynching them over network. When I come back later I see that rsync only copied the first 3 files and then threw an "i/o error, file not found". I perform 'ls' command in the still open shell on the USB 3 disk, it lists the files ok. Then in a file manager (midnigh commander) I hit TAB key to change file tab rom USB folder to some local folder and bam, system hard freeze. REISU does nothing, but finally the B does the reboot. USB/Rsync error hard freezing the whole system, REALLY?...

Kernel is 4.4.5-1-ARCH.
How do I fetch the journal entry?
