And you have tried so far? I guess 'xrandr --output HDMI1 --auto' or setting any of the listed modes does not help either. Have you tried [cold] booting up with the HDMI attached? Depending on the driver used, you might need to change the kernel parameters.

nothing of the things you mentioned helps and the kernel parameters article you've referenced is irrelevenat as I have an Intel onboard sound & video controller
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
this thing is quite frustrating I must say, I've already searched the net for a solution but nothing seems to work.

Have you tried setting the refresh frequency to 50Hz for the tv? It seems to report that as the default.

Thanks, I've tried it just now but unfortunately there is no change.
xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1080 --rate 50

Not many other ideas than trying to reboot with the TV connected and check if it will automagically work, pay attention if it works before starting to load the kernel (in the bios and grub menu). It might be worth checking the bios for any video related options (just in case).
Search the forums, I remember seeing people asking for help regarding TVs before, maybe you will find the fix or at least some hints that might point you in the right direction.

Unfortunately there are no video related settings in my bios and the screen stays blank before starting to load the kernel as well. I'm going to try to connect the laptop to another TV set.

That should not be the case, but apparently the TV still gets a signal. Double check the cables and sockets. Do you use any adapters?

No adapters just a regular HDMI->HDMI cable. Previously I had a thinkpad T420s which was connected to the same TV set albeit using a DP->HDMI cable (it didn't have a HDMI port), and everything worked great.

1. Connected the laptop to a different TV using the same HDMI cable - OK
2. Connected the laptop to a different TV using a different cable - OK
3. Connected the laptop to my TV using a different cable - OK
Can anyone explain this so that I will be able to buy the right type/brand of cable to work with my TV?
* From my understanding the HDMI standard should be backward compatible and the cable can have a maximum length of 45 feet (~13 meters). According to the description my cable should support the 1.4 standard and is 3 meters in length.

Try putting a little bit of pressure on the cable in the socket, there might be no or loose contact between one of the pins. If you have the possibility, measure the cable for resistance or continuity. I would recommend buying a cable that can be returned, if it does not work.

I'm having the same problem: 2 monitors connected to my laptop, one by vga, the other by hdmi: http://sprunge.us/DaLO. Monitors both work with vga cable, and since hdmi is connected, I believe there is no hardware issue.
Why is the hdmi monitor black althought it's connected? Any suggestion would be appreciated.

@Fandelkasp Have you tried running all outputs at the same rate? Can you get them on individually?

Problem fixed. My monitors have internal settings, and I needed to find the hdmi one and switch it on.

Hi,
I've just now run into the same issue. I've recently bought a new Panasonic TX-780E and tried to connect my nettop box via HDMI to the TV. Unfortunately there is no video and no audio on the new TV, despite the fact that it works just fine with the old TV (a Philips) when using the same cable. Connecting my laptop to the TV works just fine, so I'm guessing there is a incompatibilty on the hardware layer. The nettop is a atom 330 ion that has a nvidia graphics chip onboard. According to xrandr everything is just fine and even glxgears reports constantly 60fps (respectively 50fps if I change the --rate).
Right now I'm a little bit lost. Have you found a solution? Should I contact Panasonic support. Or should I even return the TV?
Any ideas welcome!
Cheers

Hello IchGmbH,
Welcome to Arch Linux. Much has changed in the last two years, and the original poster of this thread marked it as solved meaning they no longer have the problem. I am going to suggest you start a new thread on the topic that you will own. If you think this thread relevant, go ahead and link back to this thread using BBCode url tags. In the mean time, I am going to go ahead and close this thread, Thanks.
