Hi!
I'm using GNOME with GDM on my laptop. I'm trying to get GDM to show login display on external monitor when connected, but everything I tried so far doesn't work.
Back, when I was using Mint, I simply put something like this and it worked as I expected.
#!/bin/sh
EXTERNAL_OUTPUT="HDMI1"
INTERNAL_OUTPUT="eDP1"
if (xrandr | grep $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT | grep " connected "); then
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT --off --output $EXTERNAL_OUTPUT --auto
else
xrandr --output $INTERNAL_OUTPUT --auto
fiI think it should be possible with GNOME & GDM to, however I have no idea how do this.

If that code worked for you on mint then most likely it was because of the display manager mdm. You could try installing mdm and and start it up with a gnome session. Then your sh script may work.
