Hi folks, is anybody able to run MATLAB R2016a on Arch?
- I followed the wiki about MATLAB
- I downloaded MATLAB for Linux
- I installed it successfully
- I have a student licence
- I run the activation tool multiple times without any errors
I keep getting the following error:
$ matlab
License checkout failed.
License Manager Error -9
Your username does not match the username in the license file.
To run MATLAB on this computer, you must run the Activation client to reactivate your license.
Troubleshoot this issue by visiting:
http://www.mathworks.com/support/lme/R2016a/9
Diagnostic Information:
Feature: MATLAB
License path: /home/jakob/.matlab/R2016a_licenses/*.lic:/usr/local/MATLAB/R2016a/licenses/license.dat:/usr/local/M
ATLAB/R2016a/licenses/license_jathink_363910_R2016a.lic
Licensing error: -9,57.1) In the licence file there is no username, but the LicenseNo matches my license.
2) As suggested here one need an eth0 device. I tried reverting to traditional device names, rebooted, reinstalled MATLAB, activated and started it: same error.
Any ideas? Thank you!

That license path looks suspicious, I'm not sure but I suspect '/home/jakob/.matlab/R2016a_licenses/*.lic' is not a valid, you have to provide the path to a file, not a glob. You might want to remove (from the environment variable) the other two license files just to make sure it used the one you want.
You might also want to check this 'Your username does not match the username in the license file.', inspect the license file (it should be a text file) and see if there is anything suspicious.

Thank you for your reply!
I think MATLAB just has a strange idea of how a search path looks like ^^
matlab -hand this tells me how to specify a specific license file.
matlab -c /usr/local/MATLAB/R2016a/licenses/license_jathink_363910_R2016a.licSame error ![]()
$ head /usr/local/MATLAB/R2016a/licenses/license_jathink_363910_R2016a.lic
# BEGIN--------------BEGIN--------------BEGIN
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE. Any changes will be overwritten.
# MathWorks license passcode file.
# LicenseNo: XXXXXX
#
# R2016a
#I checked the license file again: There is no sign of a username in this text file. Only the LicenseNo, and that do match my actual license.
Any further ideas? Thank you!

Does the license file have any SERVER lines?
Regarding the license file path, that is usually defined with an environment variable, either LM_LICENSE_FILE which is generic and all programs try this one, or a program specific environment variable which is tried first, which for matlab seems to be MLM_LICENSE_FILE. You might want to check where either of these are being set and adjust it to point to your license file.
Depending on your license file you may need to run a license manager and set LM_LICENSE_FILE or MLM_LICENSE_FILE to point to there.

No line containing "SERVER" (case insensitive) or my username.
Setting and exporting this environment variables to the path containing the license file does not change anything. Same as using the -c option to specify the license file directly.

Not sure what else to say. Licensing is always a pain to get to work right and usually it's just a small detail that is missing. I would recheck everything and assume nothing.
I don't know what information you used to buy/register for your license but I would start there, things like username, hostid, etc.
That said, it might also be a problem due to which library versions matlab expect to find in the system (older libs) and the ones you have (newer libs), and that may be causing licensing to not work.

Thanks ROOKIE! Yeah, maybe the latter reason (library conflicts)...
Actually, the licensing process with this MATLAB version is supposed to be extremly easy! I only have to log in with my MathWorks credentials (works). Then MATLAB lets me select my (only) license, I press "Finish" and it says "Activation complete". But then it don't start...
Maybe I try manual licensing again (downloading the license file and so on).

Supposed to be easy? Is that like when publishers clearinghouse says "you might be a winner"?
I agree that the license path looks a bit suspect. Why are there two different listed locations for the .lic files and also the .dat file?
Try looking at those file locations and finding the actual working file you wish to use then only including that one in the path?
If quantum mechanics hasn't profoundly shocked you, you haven't understood it yet.

I already changed the license path in three different ways (see above: matlab -c and the environment variables). Changing the path worked, but the error is the same.
