this looks clean as far as I can tell.

my guess is that the problem is x11glvnd related, is there a way to disable it?

all I can find online is people having problems running steam games, but nothing like this hmm

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

What is a graphical session? DM, DE, WM? What are you trying to start and how are you starting it?

Moving to NC...

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

stying to start SDDM via 'systemctl start display-manager'

but if I directly start /sbin/X its just a black screen as well

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

So, this is going to be one of those protracted, painful processes?

What are you starting from SDDM? What is in the journal for SDDM? You don't start X from /sbin/X, you use startx and an .xinitrc: have you tried that? Have you read any of the (numerous) threads on how useless SDDM is and how to fix work around it?

This should be enough to get you going: I don't really have the stomach for this sort of forced extraction...

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

Silly question, but does is your video card supported by 361.28? Nvidia has a list of drivers each card supports. Perhaps you have gone outside the range of your card's supported driver? For example: my GTX560 supports the 361.28 driver but my old GTX285 does not. Just a thought.

sorry, I didn't mention these things because I thought it was (only) a driver problem, since everything works when using nouveau, and it worked with the old nvidia driver.
looks like SDDM doesn't work with the driver, if I directly start i3 (via startx / .xinitrc) it seems to be working. since i don't really need SDDM, i'll just do that from now on, consider this solved.

thank you for your help

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

Hmm, I noticed something similar that may be related. My fallback installation of Arch uses Enlightenment and all the windows are black. I can see title bars, the back ground, and the widgets, but the actual content of the windows are just black. I don't know for certain that this is related since I so rarely use a DE for that installation (it's pretty much exclusively for maintenance stuff so it's usage command line only). I was checking it this morning to see how things were going in the land of the GUI.

Maybe related, maybe not. The last time I checked was over a month ago. I've been running updates on my Arch installs round robin style and haven't gotten to my desktop or laptop which are kept up-to-date.

edit: My Desktop does not seem to be affected, but it was updated with pacman -Su. I ran pacman -Syuw a few days ago, and -Syu yesterday on my fall back so it isn't quite as up-to-date.

Interesting - I was just playing around with enlightenment and got the exact same behaviour on my normal desktop: enlightenment ran fine but any window I opened was just black. I didn't have the time or patience to troubleshoot so dumped e and went back to my go-to DE.

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

Yeah, I don't intend on troubleshooting it either since my preference is Gnome 3 anyway.

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

For others who find this thread like I did: To fix this, go to Settings -> Composite -> Rendering -> Advanced and uncheck "Texture from pixmap". The trick is doing this without being able to see the window, I couldn't find a way that worked to do so from the command like since vieet errors on me. I basically moved my ~/.e directory, then chose software rendering during the initial wizard so I could see the window and measured with a ruler where the clicks were to swap to software rendering in the Composite dialog, then moved my real .e directory back, measured and made those clicks on the black window so I could see again, then switched back to OpenGL with the "Texture from pixmap" box unchecked to get back to normal.

Re: [solved] black screen since the nvidia update

Fixed by disabling 'texture from pixmap' as well. From Command line:

# Decode compositor config
eet -d ~/.e/e/config/standard/e_comp.cfg config /tmp/e_comp.cfg.plain

Change

value "texture_from_pixmap" uchar: 1;

to

value "texture_from_pixmap" uchar: 0;

in /tmp/e_comp.cfg.plain

# Update config with new value
eet -e ~/.e/e/config/standard/e_comp.cfg config /tmp/e_comp.cfg.plain 1

Disclaimer: Do you backups; Worked for me.
