since the gtk update, when i launch urxvt, gnome the titlebar doesn't show and gnome crashes with the error:
Theme parsing error: gtk.css:xx:xx: Failed to import: Error opening file: No such file or directory
I also occasionally get a: No such file or directoryxinit
I should note I launch gnome via startx and xinitrc.
I have also set all the themes to the default Adwaita theme and deleted all of my other themes, and this issue is still happening.
Any ideas?
Clicking any extension settings button in gnome-tweak-tool also crashes everything with a similar error, I have no idea where to start.
EDIT:
the only way i was able to fix this is by blasting away all gnome related configs in my home dir... not ideal

Have you created a new, clean, user to see if the error persists in that? If a clean user works then the issue is in your current home, if the clean user doesn't work then it's in your general filesystem.

I just tried, and it appears that the issue is NOT happening with a new user, but gnome is also crashing with no error response, which doesn't help.
i copied my xinitrc to the new user to launch gnome, so I can safely say it's nothing to do with that that's breaking.

Also seems to fail when the pinentry window comes up for gpg... very odd

If i delete the .config directory and run startx, applications that previously caused a crash seem to work fine, however if i log out and log back in. some of my gnome settings appear to magically be restored (background, monitor settings, etc) and then things crash again.

I had to install urxvt just because gnome-terminal stopped working for me, but I've experienced no issues with urxvt.
Since you're getting a theme parsing error, does this happen with default adwaita theme, or could it be that your gtk theme just hasn't updated to support 3.20 properly yet and it causes applications to crash?

It happens on any theme, although I no longer get the theme parsing error using Adwaita.
My hunch is there is a configuration for certain gtk windows causing gnome to crash, because it happens on settings windows in gnome-tweak-tool also.
What is your issue with gnome-terminal? does it cause gnome to crash?

Did you try renaming ~/.config/gtk-3.0/ or ~/.config/dconf/?
no crash with gnome-terminal. It simply fails to start with an error.

i tried renaming .config entirely and booting up with it not existing, it worked initially but there is something else restoring settings because once i exited and logged back in all of my gnome settings came back.
