no /dev/printers/0 since 2.6 kernel. [wiki]

today I founbd out that i haven't got my printer availible under 2.6....

for me the usual procedure was to load "lp" and then i have a /dev/printers/0 to print on. Now in 2.6 I have no szch device, i have this directory /dev/printers but no file in it....

if i reload the "lp" module i can read in dmesg that the module was successfully loaded but no device was found?!

any suggestions....?

Hmmm, I wanted to give you my list of loaded modules, when I remembered that I compiled them in the kernel (I need to recompile it since I would need the SCSI variant).

But I think you should look for parallel port modules (that is if you have a parallel port printer) - I remember a number of kernel options relating to this.

Here are my dmesg snippets relating to the printer (chronologiaclly) :

request_module: failed /sbin/modprobe -- parport_lowlevel. error = -16
lp: driver loaded but no devices found
.
.
.
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP(,...)]
lp0: using parport0 (polling).

hmmm the first error is odd .... ah well, /dev/printers/0 is there ;-)

no, no usb printer just a normal parallel port printer

i have exactlly the same lines in my dmesg, just the error code is another :

and obviously it works without any problems in 2.4, gonna have to rebuild the 2.6 kernel today i guess

I'm pretty sure the 2.6 kernel modules have changed names. Skim through the medules to see if you need any other ones...

Sorry to say I have the exact same problem and after numerous attempts to get it going I am still nowhere. I tried this in MODPROBE.CONF (alias char-major-6-* lp / alias /dev/lp* /dev/printers) w/o any luck. lsmod has both lp & parport listed but are still not available for option in setting up a printer in cups.
lp 8288 0
parport 23808 1 lp
If I stumble across anything I'll let you know Dariball. Good Luck! I'll keep checking back for any divine guidance. :?

yes, i'm stuck too....

brwsed through the kernel to find out what module was maybe built-in in 2.4. and is not in 2.6., but can't find one.

the strange thing about this issue is, that dmesg tells me that lp is loaded, but doesn't find a device, like it weren't plugged in or damaged.....gonna ask google later if I can kill some time I guess...

what mainboard do u have, for me it's a via chipset on a gigabyte board with an amd 800 in it.

I have a Shuttle AV45GT w/via chipset & onboard CMedia 8738 audio. P4 1.6A and intel eepro100 NIC. Yea, everything worked great in 2.4 but wasn't nearly as fast as 2.6. I don't do enough printing to make it a must but it would be nice to print out manuals and configs for reference. If all else fails I might end up getting a print server and just connecting up that way. :shock: Anyway, I'll keep looking and trying. I'll let you know if I have any luck.

Still no luck here with anything yet. Also Dariball, I have a HP Officejet 710 All-In-One printer. Just wondering what type of printer you are using too. Maybe it has something to do with HP, but it's not looking like that is the problem. Anybody else got any suggestions? You are more than welcome to give us your input. TIA

Did anyone find a solution to this issue..... no lp in /dev when running kernel-2.6.3. Devfs doesn't seem to create it at boot.

they all sound like devfsd.conf issues. if the module is still in the kernel then it would come down to enableing permissions through devfsd.conf likely.

Sorry! :oops: I sent a private message to Dariball that I had found out by putting "parport_pc" in my rc.conf then it would link lp & parport together. My system is printing fine with everything directed to "lp". I got this hint from a cups how-to here in documentation by neocephas?.

Did anynone find the problem? Here it happens too, the same problem under 2.6.3 kernel - no lp device on /dev directory....

So, if solution exists, tell me, please...
