Intel hardware acceleration gets disabled

This infuriates me. Sometimes even at starting the Cinnamon GUI, sometimes while coding in Eclipse, sometimes while opening a new page in Firefox, I get a stuck on render ring error, see the dmesg.

But what bugs me most can be seen in the X.org log

The most interesting part:

[   383.037] (EE) intel(0): Failed to submit rendering commands (Input/output error), disabling acceleration.
[   383.038] (EE) intel(0): When reporting this, please include /sys/class/drm/card0/error and the full dmesg.

This wasn't noticeable on Mint. Without hardware acceleration Cinnamon looks awful. I basically can't use the computer for 20 minutes without a GPU hang. Can I do something to alleviate it of fix it? My hw setup

I have a feeling it's related to the nvidia-lts driver. Often the acceleration gets disabled just after the mieq overflows. Is there any workaround? As far as I know the nouveau driver gives significantly inferior performance and worse power management. Using Bumblebee.
