Greetings,
I am having a LOT worse performance with the latest kernel 4.5. Basically, systemd-journald was failing at shutdown, shutdown took > 30 seconds where previously < 5, firefox is unusable, none of my games start, heck, even opening a terminal would lag. Now, fortunately for me, I have a custom kernel:
[jbs@dmb-gaming-laptop ~]$ inxi -S
System: Host: dmb-gaming-laptop Kernel: 4.4.1-2-custom x86_64 (64 bit)
Desktop: Fluxbox 1.3.7 Distro: Arch Linux
[jbs@dmb-gaming-laptop ~]$
That I can use in the mean time. So all of my above issues are solved, HOWEVER, my reason for posting is this: Does anyone else have such horrible performance drops as of the update? Since I have more or less confirmed the kernel as the cause, this could potentially impact a great deal more users, and thus I wanted to draw attention to it. I have no issues specific to the kernel that need solved, now that I can use my custom one. But, again, if this is is indeed the kernel I feel someone needs to know about it, as it could negatively impact many more users.
All the best and hoping for a quick fix in the near future,
JohnBobSmith
EDIT: These are my laptops specs. Note that I am for sure using the open source drivers, I un-installed proprietary ones recently. For whatever reason though, inxi reports fglrx.
[jbs@dmb-gaming-laptop ~]$ inxi -SCG

EDIT 2: Doh! I didnt read all the forum titles correctly, and completely missed the "Kernel & Hardware" section. Sorry for posting in the wrong area...

Hello,
I've encountered the same problem but I was not suspected the kernel. The performances was terrible, my cpu was overused. Thank you for posting here, I've just downgrade the kernel to the previous version, it's ok now !
Sorry for eventual english mistakes, this is not my native language.

For sure Arphel. I was wondering if it was just me and something I did, or if it was upstream's fault. Thanks ewaller by the way
Speaking of upstream's fault... Should I submit a bug report of some sort? I've actually never submitted bugs before despite the fact I like to code. But basically I hope someone, somewhere knows about this bad kernel and it's not exclusively something I did wrong on my end.
EDIT: I would just like to point out that there are a great deal of threads regarding kernel 4.5 in this forum and other areas. Perhaps it might be a good idea to flag it a a bad kernel officially?? I just really don't want this bad kernel to burden other Linux users unnecessarily. My peace of mind comes from knowing its not just me I guess.

Strange, I havent noticed anything.
I have been using vanilla 4.5 since it hit stable on kernel.org in a Linux Mint box.
Albeit, using a custom configuration, But performance seems the same.

That is very strange indeed unfortunately

I have nine different computers running Arch on the 4.5 kernel right now and have not noticed any issues with performance.

Funny I have the same problem as well. My last kernel - 4.1.21 worked flawlessly without any lags

same here.
I have to waite 90s for this process before login
A start job is running for Flash Journal to Persistent storage......
and in the X, system-journaled uses all of one cpu power
plus, I cannot poweroff or reboot the system, because of some errors like "ohci-pci".
I've just downgrade the kernel too.
ps: virtualbox doesnt work
/sbin/rcvboxdrv setup

I just had to reinstall my laptop, drive died. So I have a fresh install with 4.5.0-1 and everything works fine even virtualbox...
Mbates, you are looking for 4.4.5 modules and not 4.5.x, rebuild your vbox modules

JohnBobSmith, I see you have an AMD APU. Could it be related to the bug in this thread?
Check journald logs. See senden9's comment on editing the boot flags for a quick way to test it.
