Pro Customization Wizards - Desktop Environments

I came to ArchLinux in order to create my very own "OS" from the ground up. Mostly using Compiz or, if it doesn't work, with Kwin because of the effects.

My question is: Do I have to download a Desktop Environment (DE) in order to start the customization?

And if I don't actually need to download a "packaged" DE, how would I go about creating the GUI? (Compositing perhaps?)

Could I use Compiz for that as well?

Re: Pro Customization Wizards - Desktop Environments

You could. But as I understand it, Compton is the preferred compositor (if only because it is in the repos, perhaps for other reasons as well).
