I just installed sylpheed 2.2.4 from arch-current. It looks like a great EMAIL and News program. But it doesn't want to display JPEG images for me. I just see the binary code for the JPEG.
Is there a way for Sylpheed to display JPEG images in Mail and Newsgroup messages? Am I missing a dependency?

I'm using Sylpheed-Claws and there is a setting to select display of jpeg images, don't know if Sylpheed offers a similar setting.Claws is an extended version.
Configuration->Preferences->Message View->Image Viewer

I have set the followino options in Configuration - Common Preferences - Display:
Resize Large Images to fit in a window
Display Images as inline.
But these settings made no difference. I still can't see any JPEG's in my mail messages or the postings in newsgroups.

I think part of the problem is that Syphleed is NOT detecting JPEGS in posts to newsgroups as attachments (when in fact they are).
Hmm.. Maybe there is a bug in version 2.2.4 if Syphleed.

Try sylpheed-claws in extra and see if the fault still applies.

General query - the ONLY reason I don't use Sylpheed regularly is because its compose and send capabilities seem to be limited to flat text - it does not support "rich text" or HTML - i.e. I can't use different fonts and colors when composing and sending emails.
Does sylpheed-claws support this?

No, and that's even a plus for me.
