Good one. But surely I'm not the only one with this problem.

I've discovered that with the newer kernels, I can boot up if I use nomodeset. But the desktop gui is slow (obviously). I tried disabling early KMS, but that only delayed the black screen.

I have a fresh install in a VM and lightDM stopped at a black screen and stayed there forever.
Installing xorg-drivers solved the issue here.

For me the update to 4.5.1-1 seems to have solved the problem everything is working again!

I had the exact same problem since Friday, 3rd June.
Running Arch on a Thinkpad Yoga 14.
My system is running on kernel 4.5.4-1 (May 11, 22:21), with full disk encryption (luks) and plymouth.
My boot loader is grub, boot hooks plymouth and plymouth-encrypt are set respectively.
Immediately after the boot starts, I got the following error:
[drm:intel_dp_link_training_channel_equalization [i915]] *ERROR* failed to update link training
I could solve the problem as follows:
Boot to any Archlinux iso (I used the install iso).
Unlock the luks volume and mount all logical volumes to their respective mount points
arch-chroot into the system
I then removed the i915 module and removed the plymouth and plymouth-encrypt hooks. Do not forget to add the encrypt hook!
mkinitcpio -p linux
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Reboot and voilà. Ugly but works again.

Still an issue with 4.6.1. Still stuck using 4.3.3.
