xrandr freezes X

Hi all,

I'm trying to connect an external monitor to my laptop using xrandr. If the monitor is connected before boot, everything works great without me doing anything. However, if I try to connect a monitor after boot using xrandr, X will freeze after a few minutes, causing me to hard boot. In addition, if I plug in my monitor after boot but before starting X, the monitor will automatically connect--but once I start X (startx+xmonad, if that matters), X will crash. Again, if I plug in my monitor before boot, X will not crash.

I've got no clue how to debug this issue. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

Edit: I looked in the xorg log and there doesn't seem to be anything interesting there. This was the last line before freezing, and was output when I typed xrandr:

(II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on HDMI2 using pipe 1, position (0, 0), rotation normal, reflection none

Re: xrandr freezes X

What kind of laptop do you have? I have the same problem with my new Lenovo Thinkpad L460, which I described here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1623936.

journalctl

Produces a bunch of lines when an external monitor is connected on my intel graphics laptop. There might be some clues in there.

Re: xrandr freezes X

I went to BIOS and went to the "Display" section and set it so that my laptop uses VGA output on boot, rather than my laptop screen. Now, everything works fine if my monitor is connected at boot time. However, if my monitor is not connected at boot time, but connected later, then I have the same problem: switching it on freezes the computer. In my case that's still much better than the previous situation.
