Install Arch to Disk image and boot from it

hi,

Windows supports booting from a VDI-image.
Is there a way to do something similar with linux?

I know there is a way to boot iso files with grub. But I think it is like booting from a live-cd. So the system state is not saved. (I have not tested it. So I may be wrong...)
