[solved] linux-4.5-1-x86_64 made my system unbootable

After upgrading the Linux kernel to version 4.5-1, my laptop could not be booted. I got some messages like this one:

NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 23s! [systemd-journal:151]

I downgraded the kernel like described here and the problem is solved.

I'm posting it here just in case that someone is having the same problem and needs an idea.

Should I report this problem somewhere else?

Hi having similar problems - I posted in thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=211412 before seeing your message.

Do you have an ATI graphic card by any chance?

I also had this problem, which was fixed by downgrading the kernel. Perhaps file a bug report?

Re: [solved] linux-4.5-1-x86_64 made my system unbootable

Same problem for me here.

I have an HP Pavillion G series with this CPU:  AMD A6-3400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics × 4
The graphic card is : Gallium 0.4 on AMD SUMO (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.7.1).

I'm new with Arch and don't master pacman-fu.

I have added linux to IgnorePkg in pacman.conf.  But how do I know when the problem is solved and that I can upgrade to kernel 4.5 ???

It a new install.  I was installed with kernel 4.4.5-1 and when upgrading to 4.5 after the first update,  The old kernel version was deleted from /var/cache/pacman/pkg and the grub menu wouldn't boot from the "gnulinux-linux-fallback" options either.

Is that common practice not to keep the previous kernel just in case you wouldn't boot with the new one ???

Just trying to know how Arch handle those "murphy's law" cases ?

Regards,
              BT

Re: [solved] linux-4.5-1-x86_64 made my system unbootable

@PerfMonk:

There's a package "linux-lts" with a different kernel version in it. You can have it installed in parallel to the normal "linux" kernel package. You need to look up how to create an entry for it in the boot menu of the boot loader you use. You can then boot with this different kernel if there's a problem with the kernel in the normal package.

The "lts" means "long-term support". The package is currently version 4.4.7 of the kernel and was previously version 4.1.21.

I found that in my case, the problem was the same as described here. The solution suggested there (blacklisting module sp5100_tco) worked for me.

I don't know how you tell something is resolved but when you ignore packages you will still get a notification from pacman that a newer version is available

Something like:

warning: linux: ignoring package upgrade (linux-4.5.1-1 => linux-4.5.1-2)

So you can always try it a new version when it arrives and report back so others will know :-)

Thanks to all!  I have removed "linux" and switch to "linux-lts" for a while until kernel 4.5 become usable with my AMD/Radeon hardware.
