some character are not shown correctly in kate editor

I have recently re-installed archlinux and this behaiviour occurred .

some character in my text files are not shown correctly.
for example the output of command tree is shown correctly in terminal nad in libreoffice but not in kate.

in terminal:

tree
.
├── 1.txt
└── lifeograph.desktop

in kate

.
1.txt
lifeograph.desktop

and those are question marks inside a squares.

I thought this was locale related but even the preview in dolphin file manager shows the text correctly.

f... me. you are of course right.
I had no idea kate defaulted to ASCII.
it seems that in kde option there is a option that is for Open/Save file format, and the encoding was set on "KDE Default" and that seems to be ASCII ????
thank you for reminding me of this "feature".

Re: some character are not shown correctly in kate editor

I have set the in regional setting to united stated. and changing in to 'no change' seems to make kate format default to go in option setting to utf-8.
but I have set the regional format to united states before and this didn't happen.
but thanks for all the help.
hopefully this if all my fault.
