Harddrive trouble

Hi guys!

I really need some help. For a while I have had very scary log outputs in the syslog from time to time. I suspect that one of the drives in my raid (mdraid raid 5) disappears and comes back. I have found some threads saying it could be a cable glitch or something, so I have tried reconnecting all cables and I imagined it worked for a while, but now it's back again. Here is some examples:

[821668.960071] ata5.00: failed to read SCR 1 (Emask=0x40)

Anyone have some input for this? What can it be? What can I test to make sure if it is the motherboard, a harddrive or the cables? Should I just buy new cables and replace them? Power cables or data cables?

I have, but it is not easy. The only thing I found out is that it COULD be a faulty cable, it COULD be the harddrive controller, it COULD be one of the harddrives, it COULD be a kernel problem. But I need help figuring out which one it is, but I guess this forum is not the place to get help, I should just know everything by myself.

Re: Harddrive trouble

@UglyBob,

The problem with hardware is that in many cases you can't really say whether it's faulty or not without actually trying a replacement. I'll recommend replacing components in the order of cheapest to costliest wink
