[SOLVED] VirtualBox: guest display size doesn't adapt any more

Hello,
After installing the latest guest ISO (5.0.18-1) today, the display resolution no longer works in my Windows 8.1 guest system (under Arch host, x64 vanilla kernel and packages).

The usable window size is fixed, and doesn't adapt to the host window size, even though 'Auto-resize guest display' is active. This happens both in normal and in seamless mode. In seamless, I get a centered, small, transparent portion of the screen assigned to Windows. When trying to set a larger size via View > Virtual Screen 1 > Resize to ..., it only accepts a few low-res options, not the larger ones.

As far as I know, both systems (host and guest) are completely up to date.

I can provide additional info if you explain what is needed.

Anyone knows what's wrong?

-Thanks!

Hi,

I cannot really say what's wrong, but I had the same problem with the same setup.
For now, downgrading to an older version of virtualbox-guest-utils solved the problem for me.

Best,

Re: [SOLVED] VirtualBox: guest display size doesn't adapt any more

Hello, thanks for your reply!
Sadly, I've already downgraded the following packages, to no avail:

  • virtualbox. newest: 5.0.18-1, installed: 5.0.16-4

  • virtualbox-guest-iso. newest: 5.0.18-1, installed: 5.0.16-1

  • virtualbox-host-dkms. newest: 5.0.18-1, installed: 5.0.16-4

I've also tried a brand-new Windows 8 install on the 5.0.16 environment, and it fails, too. I guess I will have to ask in the VirtualBox forums, since this seems to be a deeper problem.

Re: [SOLVED] VirtualBox: guest display size doesn't adapt any more

I have Arch_32bit and Arch_64bit as guest(s)  under Arch_64bit host.
All systems use "startx" + FluxBox, and all have kernel 4.5.1-1

On guests:
With virtualbox-guest-dkms 5.0.18-1 and virtualbox-guest-utils 5.0.18-1 I am unable to get guests to run on fullscreen (and guest display size doesn't adapt any more).
To restore fullscreen functionality, I downgraded guest machines to virtualbox-guest-dkms 5.0.16-3 and virtualbox-guest-utils 5.0.16-3.

Of course, since those are [ virtualbox-guest 5.0.16 versions + kernel 4.5.1-1 ] , xserver refuses to start without grub parameter iomem=relaxed as stated HERE

So, downgrading (guests only) and setting aforementioned parameter in (guest's) grub, for me, solved problem. I hope this helps.

jjalocha, is that a typo?  Do you not have virtualbox-guest-dkms?  Why do you have the host modules?

Re: [SOLVED] VirtualBox: guest display size doesn't adapt any more

I finally had time for this.
The problem went away with: File > Preferences > Display > Maximum Guest Screen Size: None.
I have no idea since when or why it was set on Automatic.
Thank you all for your input!
(I changed to virtualbox-host-modules-arch, now.)
