I'll leave this open briefly, but have you seen the avalanche of Gnome issues hereabout?  Have you checked your theme?
If it is not a theme issue, I'll leave the thread open.

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes on startup (gnome-shell 3.20.0-3) patch available

I've seen the avalanche, and it seems to come every 3.x bump of Gnome. I've looked at those threads in Applications & Desktop Environments which could have been related to my issue (startup-problems, gnome 3.20, gdm in heading). On another laptop I experienced what is in this thread
[SOLVED] GNOME 3.20 - Switches to TTY1 after random time , and I can also confirm that gnome-shell 3.20.0-3 solved that issue. But on this laptop I've gotten the above coredump since 3.20 of Gnome.

I now uninstalled gdm. Searched my filesystem and deleted /var/lib/gdm , /usr/share/gdm and /etc/gdm just to be sure I didn't have any special configuration somewhere related to a theme. Installed gdm again, changed /etc/gdm/custom.conf to include WaylandEnable=false since Wayland hasn't worked for me yet (using nvidia blob). Started the gdm.service and got the same error. Gnome starts fine with startx command with no coredump in the journal.

I do not believe I ever changed the default theme for gdm. I see some people are changing to lightdm until things settle down. I do believe that there are no threads under Applications & Desktop Environments similar to this issue and that it's not a theme issue.

Sometimes gnome-session crashes for me, but I created new accounts and with those I can login/logout/change user with no issues at all... I couldn't isolate my 'main' account configuration that's causing the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] GDM crashes on startup (gnome-shell 3.20.0-3) patch available

No, I haven't been able to find a workaround or a solution. My system is up to date, and gdm still crashes.

nvidia 364.19-1
gdm 3.20.1-1
gnome-shell 3.20.1-1
mutter 3.20.1-1

I can still start gnome-shell with startx command though.

.xinitrc

#!/usr/bin/sh
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto
exec gnome-session

I just ran full system upgrade and have seemingly the same issue but startx workaround does not work for me.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus , guess you've read this mpz.

I also tried to update an upstream bug with my stacktrace.

Thanks for reporting the bug. On second attempt, I was able to use startx to launch gnome-shell so we're in the same boat at the moment.
