[SOLVED] Laptop wont shutdown or reboot or suspend or hibernate

I am running Arch Linux in dual boot mode with windows 8.1  in my Acer E1-572G . I have been using Xfce4 as my Desktop environment in arch linux. Whenever i try to shutdown or reboot or suspend from arch linux it hangs up. Display turns off but fan and lights does not turn off.Nothing works and then i have to turn off my laptop manually using power button. I am not being able to find out where the problem is? sorry about my language.

thanks in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop wont shutdown or reboot or suspend or hibernate

* Does suspend and hibernate works in Windows?
* How much memory do you have?

Suspend require RAM while hibernation require swap partition [1]. Do you have enough RAM and swap?

To find out the problem look, first look at the journal log (just type `journalctl`) and then identify the hardware that made the suspend does not work. Mostly, its caused by VGA drivers. Try to switch between proprietary and open source one, and see which one is works.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop wont shutdown or reboot or suspend or hibernate

Yes everything works fine in windows. I have 4GB RAM and 5GB swap space . Everything was working fine before I ran full update few days ago.
My laptop has external AMD RADEON graphics card of 2GB. But in Arch I use only the default intel Graphics Card.

journalctl seems fine to me.
here is the output.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop wont shutdown or reboot or suspend or hibernate

There has been some issue in xfce last month,
If you are able do all those operation, after you logout xfce.
then try changing polkit file "/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.login1.policy"

for action id

  • org.freedesktop.login1.power-off

  • org.freedesktop.login1.reboot

  • org.freedesktop.login1.suspend

  • org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate

its in xml, which looks some what like this

        <action id="org.freedesktop.login1.suspend">
                <description>Suspend the system</description>
                <description xml:lang="be">Прыпыніць сістэму</description>
                <description xml:lang="be@latin">Prypynić sistemu</description>
                <description xml:lang="da">Sæt systemet på standby</description>
                ....
                ....
                <message xml:lang="zh_CN">挂起系统需要验证。</message>
                <message xml:lang="zh_TW">暫停系統需要驗證。</message>
                <defaults>
                        <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
                        <allow_inactive>yes</allow_inactive>
                        <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
                </defaults>
        </action>

for each section

<allow_any>auth_admin_keep</allow_any>
<allow_inactive>auth_admin_keep</allow_inactive>

change it to

<allow_any>yes</allow_any>
<allow_inactive>yes</allow_inactive>

see man polkit to know know about other options.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop wont shutdown or reboot or suspend or hibernate

If the shutdown and suspend worked then, reboot should work too.. recheck the configuration.

or may be add one more line, I had it in my config.

                <defaults>
                        <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
                        <allow_inactive>yes</allow_inactive>
                        <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
                </defaults>
