[Solved] AMD APU fails to boot with kernel 4.5

Posting this in case anyone runs into the same issue...

When I updated to 4.5.0-1 from 4.4.1 my Thinkpad Edge E525 with an AMD A8-3500M failed to boot.  It stopped before I could log in and ejected the CD drive. I had to manually power the laptop off.
I booted from a CD and reverted to an older kernel. I saw the following in my journald log:

ACPI Error: No handler or method for GPE 0B, disabling event (20160108/evgpe-790)
ACPI Error: No handler or method for GPE 0C, disabling event (20160108/evgpe-790)
ACPI Error: No handler or method for GPE 0D, disabling event (20160108/evgpe-790)
...
systemd-journald[211]: Missed 21 kernel messages

.. and this repeated over and over.

I found this bug report: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=114201

I blacklisted sp5100_tco in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.

blacklist sp5100_tco

This allowed me to boot 4.5.

Edit: See senden9's comment on an easy to to boot a 4.5 kernel by blacklisting the module at boot time.

Re: [Solved] AMD APU fails to boot with kernel 4.5

Also a big thanks from me.

For the other people there come here and read this solution: You can append this line in your kernel command line at your boot loader to get into your system and make the blacklisting permanent

modprobe.blacklist=sp5100_tco

Holy cow; this solved my problem as well.  It was a real bear tracking this down, and I only discovered it by searching on similar error messages.

Thank you SO VERY MUCH for this!

Re: [Solved] AMD APU fails to boot with kernel 4.5

a couple days ago I made a bootable USB (the last one I had was from 01/2014) so that I could get in and journalctl the laptop, because even in single user mode I couldn't type anything. finally got around to it today, and found these error messages flooding the log (pages and pages and pages). quick google search and bam, problem solved by blacklisting this.

Thank you very much for posting this!

It looked like I'd chosen the wrong night to update my kernel.

Re: [Solved] AMD APU fails to boot with kernel 4.5

I'm running AMD Kabini [Radeon HD 8210] and I am experiencing the same issue during install. Currently I'm attempting to dual boot with Windows 10. Should I blacklist monoprobe with the install media prior to install? It's seems everyone who posted already had Arch installed.

Thanks for posting this.

Re: [Solved] AMD APU fails to boot with kernel 4.5

yes, if the installation iso has the same problem blacklisting that module should work.

(the live environment is also running archlinux, it's just customized for installation).

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Since kernel 4.5, i could boot and work with my Box until:
- I wanted to load the Battery and inserted the AC-Loading-Cable, while i was working with my Box
- I wanted to brighten, or darken the Backlight of my Display/Screen with Hotkeys (Fn-x)
- I wanted to raise or lower the Speakers Volume with Hotkeys
- When i booted with Battery present and AC-Loading-Cable inserted and the Battery reached the "full" State
- Or i wanted to shut down my Box by pressing the Powerbutton

After the Freezing arised, i could only shut down my Box by holding the Powerbutton pressed

Could not find anything interesting for me in the Logs (surely because i simply don't know where to look :-)). Then i worked with my Box in Console Mode (didn't start my Graphical Environment with

xinit

) and tried to track the Cause of my Problems. When i tried to brighten the backlight with Hotkeys, then i noticed a Flooding with Messages like MiscDev described in his first Post. I hope that Users experiencing the same Problems would find this Place, like i (Anti-Geek) did.

Again, thank you

Ngili
