Does Nvidia SLI work on non-sli motherboard

Hello,

I wanted to ask if nvidia sli works on non sli motherboards. To be more specific, I am building a pc where everything would be virtualized so I could switch or run multiple OSes easily, mainly for development. My biggest concern is if SLI could run on qemu virtualized arch system as it virtualizes a non supported chipset. On windows side, there's a program called DifferentSLI which somehow patches the driver to support it, but nothing like that is available for linux.

Or a little off-topic question if the upper is not going to work: can I passthrough to vm and reinitialize on main system those gpus without reboot?

Your help would be appreciated.
