SOLVED: COMRESET error on DVD writers

I have suddenly started to experience boot time errors:
ata4: COMRESET failed (errno=-32)

These repeat several times, causing considerable delay in system startup.

Once I eventually get to the desktop, I'm told that the system is working in software rendering mode.

If I disconnect one of my DVD writers, the error changes to
ata6: COMRESET failed (erno=-32)

If I disconnect both DVD writers, the system boots quickly and without any error and without the 'rendering' warning..

I find it difficult to believe that both DVD writers (or the connections to them) have failed simultaneously.  My one and only hard drive is connected to another port on the same SATA (motherboard) controller, so it seems unlikely to be a controller issue.  There have been no changes to hardware configuration - it's been many months since I've even taken the side panel off the case.  Mobo is an old Intel DH55TC.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing this problem and how to fix it?
Is there anything I should be looking for in the dmesg output, or any other diagnostics?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: SOLVED: COMRESET error on DVD writers

This issue has resolved itself after my latest system update.  I suspect that it was a bug introduced (again?) into the Linux kernel 4.5.1, and backtracked in 4.5.2.
