[SOLVED] Problems with Gedit after removing KDE libraries

When I installed Arch on my system in 2014, I installed KDE as my desktop.  I've since moved over to using Awesome as my WM, with no DE, and have slowly been dropping KDE packages with every upgrade.  In the most recent upgrade, I removed

baloo4-akonadi
baloo-widgets
dolphin
dolphin-plugins
gwenview
psensor
zandronum
kdeutils-kgpg
kdeutils-kdf
kdeutils-kremotecontrol
kdeutils-superkaramba

Since then I've had some icon issues with Gedit, as seen below.  Also included is terminal vomit.

The Oxygen theme (as well as all other themes I have installed, none were uninstalled) doesn't have these -symbolic icons listed in their file manifests, so I'm having a hard time making heads or tails of these warning messages.

(gedit:4957): Gtk-WARNING **: Theme directory base/ of theme oxygen has no size field

** (gedit:4957): WARNING **: Could not load theme icon user-bookmarks-symbolic: Icon 'user-bookmarks-symbolic' not present in theme oxygen

** (gedit:4957): WARNING **: Could not load theme icon user-home-symbolic: Icon 'user-home-symbolic' not present in theme oxygen

** (gedit:4957): WARNING **: Could not load theme icon drive-harddisk-symbolic: Icon 'drive-harddisk-symbolic' not present in theme oxygen

(gedit:4957): Gtk-WARNING **: Allocating size to GtkOverlay 0x1564890 without calling gtk_widget_get_preferred_width/height(). How does the code know the size to allocate?

Yes, I get different icons when trying different themes, but all some form of error.  Here's with the Gnome icon set.

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Gedit after removing KDE libraries

This looks a lot like problems gtk2 (and many gtk3) themes give since the changes in gtk 3.20 .

Did that update include gtk 3.20 + ?
Do you have adwaita-icon-theme installed ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Yes to both, and adwaita-icon-theme is also version 3.20-1

When running that, I get the following:

gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file in '(null)'.
If you really want to create an icon cache here, use --ignore-theme-index.

Cloak 3.20

Re: [SOLVED] Problems with Gedit after removing KDE libraries

After yet more Googling, I stumbled across a fix.  It involved running the following command:

gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache

But I'm still left wondering why this worked, and why the problem even happened in the first place.
