AMD-Vi not enabling

I have IOMMU enabled in the BIOS, and i'm using a supported CPU, however when I do 'dmesg | grep AMD-Vi', i get this

This is also listed

Any reason why? This is all supported hardware and IOMMU/Virtuallization worked on my previous installation.  (Elementary OS Freya)

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

It looks like there might be two IOMMU versions and you have some IOMMU version-less-than-2. Are you sure this isn't the case? How do you know IOMMU doesn't work, did you try actually using it?

Both Intel and AMD have 2 generations of virtualization support..

Around 2005 the first generation became available, AMD-v and VT-x (intel ) .
In 2013 the second generation was introduced, called AMD-Vi and VT-d .

The main difference between those 2 generations is that you need the newer one for PCI passthrough .

Both your motherboard and your processsor need to support AMD-Vi . if one of them doesn't, you're limited to AMD-V .


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

I had a similar problem in my dmesg on my laptop which is a carrizo with AMD/ATI chipset where the kernel was trying to load the AMD IOMMU V2 kernel module and I got the same error with it reporting it was not available.

What I discovered from the dmesg is it appears the IOMMU is actually integrated on the AMD integrated chip graphics processor and another one on the ATI graphics processor using GART.  It seemed like DRM was trying to access the IOMMU during boot prior to the graphics modules initializing their GART IOMMU and pulls in the AMD IOMMU V2 driver which fails to load with amdkfd properly.

To fix it I added both the amdgpu and radeon kernel modules to the modules section of my mkinitcpio.conf and remade the initramfs for my kernels.

When I did that it allows those two modules to load during the initramfs stage and initialize the GART IOMMU on the chips, I noted after doing that when DRM loads it does not report any errors and my kernels no longer load the AMD IOMMU V2 module at all.

Seems to be working to me as I no longer have any IOMMU error messages in my dmesg, so you might try something similar to help in your case and it might work.

I'm also not using any IOMMU boot parameters on my kernel line, I tried experimenting around with them and nothing seemed to work.

I just think AMD put the GART IOMMUs on the graphics chip itself and they need to be initialized before drm.
