Hi
I've just installed Archlinux now, and I have got KDE up running but no sound. When I start up KDE I get this message:
"Informational - artsmessage
Sound server informatinal message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device"
I havn't installed any sound drivers because I don't know what to install.
Intel Corp.|ICH4 845G/GL Chipset AC'97 Audio Controller (snd-intel8x0)
is what I have.

Are you a member of the 'audio' group on your system?

Try as root:
gpasswd -a ur-user audio
Yep! I know ... my english sucks

That removed the error, but I still have no sound.

Did you add alsa to the daemons list in /etc/rc.conf? Maybe try the unmute commands (from the wiki). Sorry to be so brief. Late for work.
Good luck,
Bill

After unmuting the sound with alsamixer, run "alsactl store" as root. Then add alsa to the DAEMONS list in /etc/rc.conf. Then reread the wiki.

in your rc.conf file
you have to add your sound card for example my card is Intel AC'97 end i added like
MODULES=(snd-intel8x0)
for each rebooting make it automaticly you have to add the same file this.
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug !pcmcia network alsa netfs crond)

I was having this same issue with my sound. After following all the directions here and reading the wiki it finally works. Thanks everyone for all the help.

It always comes down to following the docs.

Then run:
# alsaconf
I don't know how often I will have to say this (already said it too often): alsaconf will not help you, it will rather break udev autodetection. The only case that requires alsaconf is when you use ISA sound cards (no PCI, no ISAPNP).
The Alsa wiki page clearly tells you why there are autoloading problems and how to fix them, so please STOP RECOMMENDING ALSACONF.
