Multiple Applications segfault

Hi,

since I have upgraded my system last week, I noticed that several applications segfault at start or at random timing.
So far the following applications do not work anymore:

firefox

Process 5956 (firefox) of user 1000 dumped core.

                                                Stack trace of thread 5956:

I really dont have any idea, which lib could be responsible for this strange behaviour.
Until now, my arch system used to be quite stable...
I would appreciate any help

Re: Multiple Applications segfault

Hm... did you upgrade or remove anything recently?? I feel like you are missing some core package, thereby causing multiple applications to segfault. Chances are if you get firefox working thunderbird will work too. The other two apps I have no experience with. To test my theory of missing packages, try pacman -Qi firefox in a terminal and install anything thats listed under dependencies or optional dependencies. Also, trying doing the pacman -Syu as well. Hopefully that'll work! smile

Re: Multiple Applications segfault

thanks for your reply. I have assumed something similar, therefore I have already checked the things you mentioned.
However nothing has changed : /

Also 'pacman -Dk' and 'Dkk' does not show any unmet dependencies

Re: Multiple Applications segfault

Do you have an Intel CPU and forgot to do the microcode update early? As in before loading arch's initramfs.

Hi,

since I have upgraded my system last week, I noticed that several applications segfault at start or at random timing.

the general advice is to do a "full upgrade system" with a "pacman -Syu",

and also to check if your mirror is not out of sync :

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mi … al_mirrors

currently there is a huge problem with the last version of gtk3 ( 3.20.5 ), all gtk3 applications ( like firefox ) will crash if the function "save as" is used :

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=212811

sometimes a bug in gcc or llvm ( clang ) can trigger weird bugs only on a specific CPU, what kind of CPU you have ?

if you have errors despite these advices then it could be a hardware problem :

- a problem with your ram modules : you can run memtest to check your ram modules
- high temperature for your CPU ( bad cooling )
- a problem with the motherboard ( bios, cpu microcode, especially if your hardware is very recent )

Re: Multiple Applications segfault

The GTK update, did not fix any of my problems.
My CPU: 'Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3450S CPU @ 2.80GHz'

temp. of motherboard and cpu seems normal

I also have installed the intel-ucode package and added to the grub config.

I dont think its a hardware issue, since the rest of the system works fine, just a few applications stoped working. (..or do not even start)

Also interesting: Firefox and Thunderbird try to check if the plugins are compatible at first, after 1 second they crash

Re: Multiple Applications segfault

For hardware issues, you might want to check for "mce" messages being logged. I had issues with crappy RAM recently, and I can see something about that if I do this:

journalctl MESSAGE='mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged'

The messages look like this for me:

Apr 23 21:28:56 box kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
Apr 24 01:57:15 box kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
Apr 24 04:11:46 box kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
Apr 24 06:18:08 box kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged

Or try this as the messages might be a bit different, and look for errors through what's printed:

journalctl _TRANSPORT=kernel | grep 'mce:'

There's also a daemon "mcelog" that you can install that decodes some data the CPU provides when those MCE events happen and logs that. You then search like this:

journalctl -u mcelog

And an example event looks like this:

Apr 27 18:25:35 box mcelog[601]: Hardware event. This is not a software error.
Apr 27 18:25:35 box mcelog[601]: MCE 0
