[spam] due to a massive amount of spam...

...or at least spammer registration I am now implementing blanket bans by email address.

If this affects you and you feel that's unfair either a) get an email address with a legitimate ISP that actually acts against spammers or b) PM with an excellent case for why you can't do that and I'll give you gmail invite...

As far as I know bots can't yet defeat image verification registration, which makes these guys human.  Email verification is our second line of defence but if people are using a spammer friendly ISP we're thwarted again.  This is our new defence.

I still have 99 Gmail invites, if you're running short I can hand out some too.

If you're running short you can always invite yourself again to get another 100 invites   8) roll

You get 100 invites at once? I had to wait for years to get to 100!

Sorry, aint the case, captcha, which is what image verification is known as, has been beaten in a wide range of cases, with quite a bit of success.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha#Defeating_CAPTCHAs

There's other schemes apart from OCR to defeat them, I've heard of some setups, taking captchas and reposting them on another site pretending to offer some other service. Then users signing up for the 'other service' give a correct captcha response, to which the bot can then use.

Captcha's are defeated to an extent, but they're better than nothing at all.

It does take a couple of weeks if I remember correctly. It certainly didn't took as long as in the beginning of gmail

Re: [spam] due to a massive amount of spam...

We are suffering the same thing in www.archlinux.com.ar , i had to enable the registration due to non-registered users spam, this stopped that, but i keep getting bots or spammers registered, and i have enabled the CAPTCHA. So they are avoiding it somehow (I'm about to read iphitus link).

Could you give a little more detail dtw, about what you did to avoid them? You did a blacklist of domains for the email address? or what?

Regards

the quality of the captcha is also a factor. Well formed image text can be scraped more easily than the obscure captcha's.
