no mixer found

Hi all,

I have sound but don't have mixer. :-(
alsamixer reports:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device

xfce4-mixer report:
alsa: Mixer attach default error: No such device

I've installed all alsa related package (lib, utils, oss, driver) and ran
alsaconf 10 times and still got the same error.

What's wrong?

Thanks,

Re: no mixer found

Are you in the "audio" group? Did alsaconf finish correctly? Does alsamixer work as root?

Re: no mixer found

hmmm.

I ran alsaconf and afterwards checked playing some video. I could listen to
audio OK so I assumed everything was OK. However, /etc/rc.d/alsa restart
shows:

: Saving ALSA Levels                                                                                                                                 [BUSY] /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1163: No soundcards found...
                                                                                                                                                      [FAIL]
:: Restoring ALSA Levels                                                                                                                              [BUSY] /usr/sbin/alsactl: load_state:1236: No soundcards found...
                                                                                                                                                      [FAIL]

I am using intel8x0 integrated sound card and never had problem with it.

Re: no mixer found

I read not long ago that /etc/modprobe.conf not should include the OSS compatibility modules as it might prevent the sound drivers from being loaded, have you disabled it?

Re: no mixer found

Thanks jaboua,

I made sure there is only

alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0

in modprobe.conf and removed alsa-oss module. However, I still see the problem.

lsmod | grep snd shows:

snd_intel8x0 30620 0
snd_ac97_codec 95136 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_ac97_bus 2176 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm_oss 50848 0
snd_pcm 84100 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 22148 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 8840 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
snd_mixer_oss 17920 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd 49124 6 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_osssoundcore 8160 2 nvsound,snd

Re: no mixer found

Is the soundcard enabled in BIOS? For some stupid reason, my BIOS keeps disabling the soundcard every time I do a soft reboot from linux (freebsd and windows work fine, not sure why), and then I get about the same problem as you.

Re: no mixer found

there is no sound option in the bios. I guess that means it is automatic.

Re: no mixer found

Same problem here. But its a m-audio delta audiophile 2496 ( Envy24 ) and a SB Audigy 4 ( runs with emu10k1 ). Both cards worked like a charm ( of course in different computers ;-) ), but after a new installation of archlinux ( yesterday evening ) its the same error as above.
I've reinstalled alsa, i compiled via abs but to no avail.

Re: no mixer found

No possible solution? I can reproduce this on my sisters computer - new arch installation and soundblaster pci 4.1 ( ensonic chip ), at first it's all ok, later ( reboot ) the card renders off. alsa recognizes the chip, installs it but there is no mixer.

Re: no mixer found

I've just had this exact same problem oli, so I'd be delighted to know if you found a solution.

I've got an SB Audigy 2 Value card. It worked fine before I powered off last night, but now it won't work, and I get exactly the same results/errors as you when I try the same things.

Anybody care to offer advice?
