Arch Linux Wiki

Wiki is ready. Along with the usage and suggestions from the users, few changes may still take place but doesn't interfere the users.
http://wiki.archlinux.org

Arch Linux Wiki is open for all Archers who are interested to contribute guides, how-to docs and translations or collaborate on posted documents. For questions or suggestions, post them in this topic.

PS.
I have not copied any how-to doc from this forum. But I added few doc names e.g. "Alsa setup", "Apache PHP and MySQL", and "CUPS setup", including a link to the original doc.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

NICE!!!  I took a look at the Wiki, and it looks great.  I fixed the link to my page -- for ~ in the URL, you need to enter it twice (~~) or the Wiki will omit it and thus give a bad URL.  I hope to add some more stuff soon...

In phpWiki there is only one username for the admin..... open for all users, no password.

All pages can be edited, press "Edit", except the navigation pages and "Documents In Progress" page. The navigation pages are currently the "Home Page" and "HOWTOs" category page.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

for the DSL (PPPOE) section of the install manual it may be prudent to mention that if they have trouble connecting to comment  out everything in  their options file in ppp.

Try using a valid wiki word, like DusTy, or DustyUser, or something like that.  You don't really need a username anyway, but I think it works if it looks like a wiki link.

Here I meant to say, asking the authors to make a copy of the original content in Wiki for other users to collaborate and keep it updated. Also for official editing, if decided.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

I already applied the Apache/PHP/MySQL howto. I'd be glad to copy and edit some of the others as well, but I don't want to do this without the respective author's permission.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

I moved the CUPS how-to over.  I'm probably going to only use the Wiki from now on and keep a local copy to generate a PDF.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

I wanted to wait until we had some docs in there.  There's a few now, I'll announce it in a couple days.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

When I did the setup and also few tests and I got worried if phhWiki cannot make a nice layout. But now seeing both the "CUPS setup" and "Apache PHP MySQL", the layout is nice.... good work.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

Forgot to login (Guest) and I also made it sound me alone did the setup, in my hurry before entering the plane going to Nairobi.... the gate was already closing. Apeiro did the base setup and I the modifications and tests.

What I actually wanted to ask, a part what made me to like about the layout, how the box / frame was made around the codes .... similar to forum's ['code] text [/'code]? Also, how about keeping this layout style as a template for Wiki layout.... to keep a common style.

Look at the source? :-D I made the boxes with the verbatim tag.  I think the pre tag does that too, but it turns on wiki links.

Edit: I just wrote a rather first-drafty version of a template for Wiki documentation:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wiki%20Template

It needs a lot of work. although I tried to sound like its written in stone, everything should be editable based on what other people think.

I don't know how well the draft would apply to guidelines or general documents, but it should be quite effective for HOWTOs.

Would it be possible to alter the stylesheet for the Wiki to make some stuff stand out. Particularly, how hard would it be to make verbatim and fixed-width text a different colour?  I assume that the Wiki is themable somehow?

If the authors are not copying the how-tos to Wiki, send a private message. If no respond, in my opinion, you (Dusty) can freely copy them to Wiki.... include a link to the original doc.

Once back in Singapore (10th), I will give time to Wiki... add few ideas, explore what phpWiki can do, build a FAQ doc from the forum's posts, and write a step-by-step installer guide as per AL 0.6 setup script with screenshots. If anyone interested can already start the work.

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

In "Recent Changes" how to display the editor's name instead of IP address?

KEYMAP=? 6:37:21 pm . . . -- 217.129.145.201
CUPS setup 1:40:07 pm . . . -- MorPhus

PS.
In Home Page, are two new sections: "FAQs" and "Hints & Tips".

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

You have to login on the bottom right sign-in-formular. Your Username must have 2 capital letters (like MorPhus), to be recognized as username. Then you could also create a Homepage in the wiki to explain yourself smile

Also you don't have any passwords, since this is the wiki. So if you want you could use my nick to post something. Only the admins got passwords

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

Just a simple question in wiki: How can we upload pictures? I could use my own account anywhere on web, but they should exist on the archlinux-server... is there any directory on ftp.archlinux.org we could upload them? Or is there a button in wiki I didn't realized yet?

edit1: Ok, found one: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/UpLoad
But it is only working for admins. Can someone of the admins test and open it for the normal users too?

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

Thanks morphus for setting up the base for the "Quick Archlinux Install" doc with screenshots. Its a good sample what Wiki can do. If the Wiki team gets a place where to upload pictures, it will help for making visual docs.

See "Quick Archlinux Install":

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

This is an old thread. I did a search when Arch Wiki was created. In few other distro forums they are mentioning about the well documented Arch wiki.... one of the best disto wiki. It started in 2004 by copying [Solved] thread from this forum. Year later Dusty did a major proof read and proper structure. And has been well maintained and updated all these years.

Nice to hear, jasonwryan.

Link how things started when the word "wiki" was discovered but not yet the software. Same feeling when the wheel was invented. smile

Well, since the thread has been bumped, I'll mention that we put some annotated links in ArchWiki:About#Early history, if you have more notable relevant items to contribute, please propose them in the talk page smile

Re: Arch Linux Wiki

Great, and cactus is also included in the history.

Said in MX Linux forum:
"Arch Linux has the best Wiki in all of Linux IMO. It is the gold standard. Nothin' but respect for the Arch team and their work."
