What desktop environment are you using? Which video card are you using (Intel or NVIDIA)?
What is the output of xrandr when the external display is attached?
When you disconnect the display, change to the second console (Ctrl-Alt-F2) and post the output of DISPLAY=":0" xrandr

I am not in a place where I am willing to open youtube. I may look later tonight. When xrandr said it could not open the display, you still saw a black screen and mouse cursor? The cursor responded to and tracked the mouse? Or was it just a static display?

First thing I would do is create a secondary user account and try to start kde from there. Make sure the first time you launch kde you don't have the external monitor connected and see if it works. It almost looks like kde is remembering a wrong setting because when you connect the external monitor you get an image.
Please clarify what you mean by docking station, from the video I can only see your laptop and an external monitor/tv, this may also be important in debugging the problem.

Same symptoms but different setup, you'll have to redo your tests with the docking station connected.

I'm starting to suspect your problem is KDE trying to automagically do the right thing and getting it wrong.
If you are running a terminal in your X session you don't need to set the DISPLAY variable, it will be already set, it is only needed when you change to a tty (control+alt+F2 for example).
The xrandr output you posted is not the same as the one you show in the video. In the video it clearly shows that 2 displays are detected. It is in your best interest to post all the information and do it accurately. That said, you could try to setup the dual monitors with xrandr and see if KDE does not get in the way.
You could also try to boot the machine already connected to the docking station and see if that makes any difference.
