[SOLVED] KDE Plasma mount USB device with write access?

Hi,

I'm fairly sure this has something to do with udev and i'm also fairly sure that there where some udev scripts on the wiki for fixing this exact issue, but i can't find it anywhere anymore...
Perhaps i'm just overlooking it every time or i really suck at searching these days wink

What i want:
- Mount an USB device in plasma (it pops up an USB device in it's device notifier). It mounts at as read only...
- Have it with write access

I know i can use fstab to get the same result or fuse mount it would probably also work, bot those aren't the solutions i'm looking for.

I'm looking for an udev script that allows users to mount USB devices with write permission.
If i search for something like "udev mount write permission" i keep finding tons and tons of articles on "writing udev files"... Not exactly what i'm looking for, hehe

I hope some of the folks in here know where this script went that i'm searching for.

Cheers,
Mark

Please don't bump.

Not an Arch discussion. Moving to Applications & Desktop Environments.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma mount USB device with write access?

Is there a write protection on the device?
Tell what device, what file system.
What happens if you mount the device manually?

And udev rules can no longer be used directly to mount/unmount devices; it can be possible through systemd though.
Or you could use udisks and a wrapper...

Device and filesystem should not matter at all!
Just a usb mass storage device and in this case formatted as EXT4. Write protection on the usb device itself is off, obviously.

Oke, that's new for me. I was under the impression that udev was the almighty device manager which would be in charge of mounting.
Did systemd *also* took over that responsibility now?...

I don't really care how this works, it just must work. I would hate a static solution like adding it in fstab. That would work for this usb device and as long as i don't change it's partition layout. It's 2016, we're past those things now. It should work in a dynamic way.
systemd.. udisks.. whatever works is fine by me.

Edit...

The solution
Oke, turns out this is an ext4 "design" thing. In fact, turns out it is a *nix file system thing.
If you inject an ntfs or fat32 usb, permission are just ignored so you can write to it. For the user that gives a user friendly experience since that is what the user expects under windows as well.
If you inject an ext4 usb it will be mounted as such and obeys all permissions. In that case you actually have to give yourself permission to write (like make a folder as root, chmod/own it to whatever the user is) and then it will "work" like ntfs and fat32 work. I think this is a massive usability flaw in *nix. Not ext4 or linux. If i inject a usb i want to be able to write to it without going through complicated commands to get started.. Oh well, that is just how it works apparently. So that also means that i'm better off using ntfs/fat32 even though i only intent to use the usb stick between linux machines, but if i use those filesystems i'm at the very least just able to write to the darn stick. That's some massive irony there, hehe.

I don't know if it helps, but I've added my user to group 'plugdev'. I don't have any issues getting automatic write permissions to any sort of external storage.
