[Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Hi,

after this mornings update from 4.5.4-1 to 4.6.1-2 on my laptop my GDM started to freeze. I had to downgrade the kernel again to get it working again. Here is what i could find in the journal:

Google yields nothing interesting in that area though... I'm glad I was able to REISUB.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Yeah should have mentioned that. I use a docking station with 2 monitors in addition to the laptop display. The two monitors seemed to be working ok but the laptop output was frozen. This happened also without the docking station (only laptop display) though.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I think it might be loosely related to this "PSR" stuff. I found this comment in the bug tracker: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/49371#comment147193

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I had bad flickering with the 4.6.1-2 kernel but adding i915.enable_psr=0 kernel parameter fixed it.

Same problem here, It freezed several times until I decide to downgrade (on a simple laptop).

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I had similar issues on a pair of intel NUC's with i915 integrated graphics chips. For me, I could boot the desktop (XFCE with LXDM), but as soon as I opened Firefox or Chrome, the desktop would lockup. I could remotely SSH in and look at the journal logs and saw GPU HANG in there.

I tried installing the latest xf86-video-intel-git from the AUR, no luck, same issues.

I tried adding the i915.enable_psr=0 kernel parameter and it looked like it might help, but eventually the problems came back.

I ultimately downgraded the kernel to 4.5.4-1 and am currently running ok with that.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Same issue on a media center setup running a Celeron N3150 with HDMI output - i was getting video freezes about 2 minutes after each reboot. Downgrading to 4.5.4-1 fixed it for me so it is definitely related to the 4.6.x family.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Yeah, something is seriously broken. I got the same GPU hang after upgrading to 4.6.1-2 on a Zotac CI323 (Celeron N3150) small-form-factor PC. Tried with the Intel DDX driver, plain modesetting and 4.6.2-1 kernel from the testing repo.

Only downgrading to 4.5.4-1 worked.

Same issue here with kernel 4.6 on a Toshiba Portege (Intel gfx): 100% reproducible freeze as soon as gdm appears.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

If https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95176#c28 is correct then we will have to wait for 4.7 which apparently fixes the problems.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Same issue on HP 850 G1.
i915.enable_psr=0 helped for now.

EDIT: helped with screen blinking.
Firefox and terminal would probably work faster on old Pentium 166Mhz. I'll downgrade for now.

Same problem here (XPS 13, intel gfx). Though, I didn't get anything in logs. System just freezes after a random amount of time on the 4.6.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Same problem here. My laptop would freeze after seeing some flickering on the screen. I downgraded to 4.5 for now. Will try i915.enable_psr=0 later.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Similar behaviour on my older Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro

i5-4200U
Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller

Immediately after the upgrade to 4.6.1-2 I noticed a stream of unprecedented warning messages, repeated every few seconds:

kernel: [drm:intel_pipe_update_start [i915]] *ERROR* Potential atomic update failure on pipe A

...including the occasional error detected:

kernel: [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A (start=32591 end=32592) time 10 us, min 1789, max 1799, scanline start 17

Since all seemed normal otherwise I was blissfully ignoring these until after 20-30 minutes the display began flashing on and off unusably, forcing a hardware shutdown and a switch to linux-lts for the time being.

[Update: unsurprisingly, same behaviour after update to linux 4.6.2-1]

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

To me (i3-5005U Broadwell) with PSR enabled by default in kernel 4.6, fullscreen videos in Firefox freeze - until I move the cursor.
This happened too when I enabled PSR by myself in 4.5 kernel.
Since i915.enable_psr=0 strangely it didn't help, I had to downgrade to LTS (I had a crasher with dosbox too). hmm

EDIT: ------8<------8<------8<------8<------8<------8<------8<------8<------8<------

my bad: PSR is still disabled for my chip. Obviously disabling FBC did the trick!

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

disabling fbc and psr  (adding: options i915 enable_fbc=0 enable_psr=0 to /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf) did the trick for me.

UPDATE: disabling fbc and psr worked for me as well

UPDATE 2: I spoke too soon. Disabling fbc seemed to help, but only made the problem take longer to come back. Downgraded kernel again back to 4.5.4.... sad

Still crashing here even with fbc and psr disabled. hmm Oh well... looks like downgrading is the only option until 4.7 is released.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

Hi. For those dealing with flickering, it may help to use the TearFree option: create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Intel Graphics"
        Driver "intel"
# Option "AccelMethod" "UXA" # or: "glamor"
        VideoRam 2000000
        Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

This fixed extremely bad video performance that (I think) started with 4.6.1-2 for me on a 440p, which seems like what a lot of people are using. The commented out line was from a forum post I stole this snippet from; maybe if TearFree doesn't work then uncommenting that will do some good.

Could be that my problems were unrelated to 4.6.1-2; they happened after a fairly big upgrade, in which case sorry for the false hope.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I've fixed this by switching to linux-lts kernel. Although it is odd that a minor kernel update breaks something like Firefox... anyway, that's we we archinoids get for always being on the bleeding edge.

Re: [Intel] screen freeze after boot with kernel 4.6.1-2

I've had the same issue on Broadwell. While digging around found that in order to solve an issue with older kernel (Kernel crashing w/kernels 4.0+ on Broadwell/Core-M chips) I had to add this in my kernel paramters

i915.enable_execlists=0

I've removed it and now 4.6.2-1 works as smooth as possible. Not sure if related, but I have these i915 settings in /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf:

options i915 enable_rc6=7 enable_fbc=1 semaphores=1
