I have kde installed on my system. NOt the plasma.
the installation was a old one

Now i am updating to

How to get the best installation of kde. Some one can give me some tips.

What? Do you mean that you want to install KDE4, not KDE5? That is not something that is supported here. You may be able to find remnants of kde4 on the AUR, but be aware that KDE4 has been unmaintained since August 2015.

Sorry for sounding like an ass, but... Just install it?? Try experimenting with stuff until something works. We can't decide whats best for you. I will likely never install KDE, but I wish you luck.

Well if you want to get rid of the old stuff and then install plasma i would go with:
sudo pacman -Rnsc qt4
sudo pacman -S plasma-desktop plasma-workspace sddm
Removing qt4 obviously will remove pretty much everything KDE4 related. (If don't want to get rid of everthing try removing kdebase-workspace only)
After the next command you should use sddm to login into you plasma session and then install the kde applications you need.
You can obviously try installing plasma immediately but i guess there would be file conflict and/or dependency problems.
