[Solved] Dell Studio XPS 1645 Overheating

Hi, I just installed Archlinux on Dell XPS Studio 1645 but it's overheating. Sometimes (not too often) I also experience screen tearing.

[r00t3r@bl4ckb0x ~]$ uname -a

Re: [Solved] Dell Studio XPS 1645 Overheating

Those temperatures are a bit high, but it is not overheating.
Is this a laptop?
Does it have good air circulation?
Are the fans running yet?
What is the room ambient temperature?

Yes it's a laptop

ewaller wrote:

Yes, its placed on a flat table with no obstruction to it's outlets.

No, the fans run only ocaasionally, they were not running while the output was taken.

26 C

At normal startup the sensors report 55+ temperature. There has been no throttling though. It has never gone 82+ even when I ran unixbench for benchmarking. But the laptop temperature makes it uncomfortable to handle or place it on lap.

This is from another laptop in same room, doing heavy tasks :

$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +56.0°C (crit = +89.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +54.0°C (high = +72.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)
Core 0: +54.0°C (high = +72.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)
Core 1: +54.0°C (high = +72.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)

Yeah, 54C is about what I would expect just idling.   Mine has definitely hit the high 90s while compiling the kernel.  What graphics chip are you using?  Any chance you are rendering in software?

I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 Graphics card. I installed Mesa and open source ATI driver. In settings, it shows OpenGL 3.1.  Can you please tell me how do I check if I am rendering in software?

Re: [Solved] Dell Studio XPS 1645 Overheating

I pull the back off mine every few months and give it a wash (the back, not the other bit ... tongue ). I live in the bush and dust everywhere.
The venting is awful once you hold the back up to the light. Clean the fan while you've got it open.

Haven't had Arch on it in years, but Fedora runs fine - fans come and go. Don't see temps in the seventies very often - F/F with 18 tabs (no video), 54C-59C across the cores currently.

Re: [Solved] Dell Studio XPS 1645 Overheating

The fan had sucked a lot of dust and the thermal paste by the manufacturer was in a pretty bad shaped overflowing to the sides of both CPU and GPU.

Cleaned the fan and applied new Arctic Silver 5

Now the temperature under same conditions are pretty OK
