No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

Please forgive me if I'm overlooking something simple (hence the Newbie Corner) but I can't get proper OpenGL accelleration to work in my VirtualBox install of Arch Linux. Host is a fairly capable Windows 7 machine with an i5 processor, AMD graphics, and 16gb of RAM running the latest VirtualBox 5.0.20. Guest is a fresh vanilla install of Arch Linux, running the latest GNOME (3.20.2).

3D Acceleration is "enabled" in VirtualBox settings, but the renderer function in Arch is reported as "Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256 bits)." I know the Arch wiki page for VirtualBox says that GDM breaks 3D acceleration, so I am running LightDM instead. All the appropriate vbox modules seem to be loaded, and virtualbox-guest-utils and virtualbox-guest-dkms are both installed.

Any ideas?

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

Have you tried replacing "virtualbox-guest-dkms" with "virtualbox-guest-modules-arch"?

Desktop or laptop?

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

I just tried switching to virtualbox-guest-modules-arch, and I'm getting the same results.

It is a laptop.

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

In an archlinux guest with acceleration enabled, I have:

OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.8, 256 bits)

From your post, I think that acceleration is indeed enabled. However, it usually far behind in performance the acceleration you can expect on a native installation.

LLVM is software rendering. I believe VirtualBox is supposed to support basic OpenGL hardware video acceleration through the Chromium driver (https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=749390#c8), which would have a positive impact on visual performance, essentially enabling Gnome's compositing.

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

That's true (@wrkerr) sorry for the misleading answer. So I am affected too. There are tons of reports like this on the internet, for example: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12746 . If you read the comments in details, it seems that most people that claim it works just get confused by the output of glxinfo (like me in my previous misleading answer).

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

wrkerr-

Is it possible that your problem is associated with the "hybrid graphics" issues (IGP and DGP integration as applied to Linux) that many laptop users report? If so, your Windows host will likely not have the problem yet your Linux guest may.

I assume the video memory is set to the Max (typically 128 MB)?

How much RAM is assigned to the guest OS?

Were additional video drivers installed (on the guest) perchance?

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

@madpierre. I have apparently exactly the same problem as wrkerr. It is a desktop computer with a discrete HD6750 graphic card (with the catalyst driver on Windows 10, no hybrid card or fancy feature). The host is Archlinux, the video drivers are installed with the official archlinux package: virtualbox-guest-utils and it somehow works (if I remove it the video become almost unuable). But apparently, I have the software renderer too for an unknown reason. Is it working for anyone here in the forum? Is it working for you? If anyone has that working I would be interested in his precise configuration.

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

olive-

Thanks for the info. Interesting.

Is it working for you?

I have no problems- but I also no longer have Windows on my machines. When I did run Win as a guest it was Win7 without issues. I didn't upgrade to WinX- too many security questions and too much like my phone. Hence my experiences in that light are meaningless. Presently, the machine using VM runs Arch as a host, two Arch guests, and two of the "evil" distros (up until recently there were actually four of the "evil alternatives" running as guests; Debian, Ubuntu, and RHEL derivs -doing some testing- no problems as well). The machine I speak of is a desktop.

After-thought: My graphics card is a NVIDIA Geforce GT-630. I doubt it will help but I'll provide my config info if you or wrkerr wish.

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

Could you post the content of your "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" file as well as the output of "glxinfo | grep -i rend" so that we can see the difference between working and non-working. I post mine. My Archlinux can be booted natively as well as in Virtualbox under Windows. When I boot natively, all work as expected (but there are no virtualbox involved then).

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

So good news. I am able to have hardware rendering with a LD_PRELOAD hack. The solution was found here: https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/12320

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/VBoxOGL.so glxinfo | grep -i render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Chromium

A fix would be to put this variable in the environment. Still not the best solution, but it is better than nothing.

Edited: Typo in the command.

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

Investigating further (and reading the link in my post above). It seems that the libgl library (usually provided by mesa-libgl but there are other ones, for example nvidia) should be all VBoxOGL.so. In order words, /usr/lib/libGL.so should be (a symlink to) VBoxOGL.so. So there is a problem with the archlinux package that should provide libgl and conflict with mesa. We should file a bug report. Note that this if I read the link in my above post correctly; we may need the original mesa libraries if the host is not capable of libgl. (this appears not to work; only the LD_PRELOAD works, which is already something).
Anyway there is definitively a bug in the way the Arch package is provided.

Updated: Bug report filed: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/49752

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

@madpierre No, I don't have any hybrid graphics processors or anything fancy like that. It's just a straightforward ATI card. I haven't installed any specific drivers in the guest, I did the install straight from VirtualBox. Video memory is set to 128mb, and RAM allocated to guest is 6gb.

@olive So are you suggesting something like this?

# /etc/profile

# hack for improving vbox rendering
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/VBoxOGL.so

#Set our umask
umask 022

# Set our default path
PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin"
export PATH

# Load profiles from /etc/profile.d
if test -d /etc/profile.d/; then
        for profile in /etc/profile.d/*.sh; do
                test -r "$profile" && . "$profile"
        done
        unset profile
fi

# Source global bash config
if test "$PS1" && test "$BASH" && test -z ${POSIXLY_CORRECT+x} && test -r /etc/bash.bashrc; then
        . /etc/bash.bashrc
fi

# Termcap is outdated, old, and crusty, kill it.
unset TERMCAP

# Man is much better than us at figuring this out
unset MANPATH

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

@wrkerr You need to export it (export LD_PRELOAD=/lib/VBoxOGL.so). Note that it won't work for 32bits apps (under a 64 bits system, if you have multilib). For this, you would need to preload the 32 bits version of VBoxOGL.so; it is not packaged in the 64 bits distribution. Check that it indeed works with "glxinfo | grep -i render". Note that this openGL support in VirtualBox appears a little buggy. Maybe you prefer to LD_PRELOAD it by hand when you need it.

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

@wrkerr and @olive I'm glad you got the "green flag" so to speak.

@olive was curious as to why my machines ran without problems yet you both have the same problems. I was curious as well. Frankly, after an exchange with another member facing a similar issue, I became even more curious. So, I contacted the folks that support nouveau and did some experimenting with my main machine this evening. Although rather insignificant at this hour, the findings may be of interest:

1) If xf86-video-nouveau is removed from either the host or guest, video rendering problems arise, particularly when attempting to stream the likes of youtube.

2) Upon re-installation of xf86-video-nouveau, the problem persists.

3) Revert to virtualbox-guest -dkms, the problem is gone.

(Note: the host, guest, and hyper-visor were rebooted at each exchange.)

Discussion: Initially, when the OS's were installed, I used virtualbox dkms (host and guest). As time passed, I was encouraged to remove virtualbox-dkms in deference to Arch host and guest modules. Apparently, the modes had been set by DKMS and the introduction of the Arch modules did nothing to change that or the operation of my machines. According to @ilia (nouveau), xf86-video-nouveau is dependent upon KMS. Thus, it's likely that the modes were reset upon removal of "xf86" and were not again set by the Arch modules upon the return of "xf86". The return of virtualbox-dkms, once again, set the modes. (I think.) Without a doubt, more study for me.

Again, glad you got it worked out.

All the best,

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

@maspierre. From what I have understood VBoxOGL.so overrides (some of) the functions of the libgl libraries (libGL.so), normally provided by mesa-libgl. As I have described in the bug report I have filled (see my comment above), upstream has a script to manage it (but I have been unable to implement it in a functional way). The problem come from the fact the functions of libGL.so are not overridden correctly. The LD_PRELOAD is a way to force the function of VBoxOGL.so to override any other exported functions no matter what; so it works. Now nvidia provides its own version of libGL.so instead of the standard mesa one. It is not surprising that changing this file can affect the bug in some way. It is surprising though that it works with this driver in the guest. The guest does not see an nvidia card, it sees the Virtualbox card (no matter what you have on the host). I have tried too to experiment with nomodeset at the kernel parameter but without any difference for me.

I found it odd as well. As you state, the host is no surprise- nvidia, nvidia-libgl, etc., etc. But the guest? "xf86-video" is a 2D accelerator which appears to shutdown Glamor and take over. My guess is that DKMS "plugs" it in and it works on a (perhaps) lower-than-optimal default level via Mesa. As of this writing, Nouveau has only responded with "depends on KMS".

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

Well, @olive and @wkerr, this is an update to the discussion I had with nouveau.freedesktop.org regarding the workings of xf86-video-nouveau as applied to my OS- host and guest. The discourse closed a few moments ago. Basically, nothing was learned. Ilia (Nouveau Project) is strong in feeling that "xf86" isn't working with either NVIDIA or Mesa. As the log shows, GLAMOR isn't being initialized, using the modesetting driver without any acceleration. Ilia suspects that the Oracle software is providing acceleration. As to why removing "xf86" has such an impact on streaming video (youtube), Ilia has no clue other than, "Could be that a different driver gets selected as a result of some odd autoprobing issue." It was suggested that I once again run the tests, collecting logs as I go. Then, review them for clues. As it stands, my system runs fine (at the present). Hence, I hesitate to mess with it very much. I also don't have the time. So, in the end, I can't offer any insights to either of you as to why my system works.

All the best,

Re: No acceleration in VirtualBox with Arch Guest

The issue has been discussed in the bug report. The maintainer mentions some instabilities with the LD_PRELOAD method and I have experienced some. This is not the proper way to solve the problem. I have briefly mentioned the proper solution in the bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/49752 . Unfortunately this require a library that is not even distributed in the ArchLinux package (but well in the upstream iso). I was hoping an updated package in a short amount of time but I do not see any progress up to now.
