I know it's frozen as even <C-Atl-Del> has no effect. Hard reboot required --unless using the laptop to raise a case against Linux when with friends or for "decorative" purpose .
EDIT: latest linux-mainline with 'MODULES="intel_agp i915"' in mkinitcpio.conf and bootcode 'i915.modeset=1' made a booo; jeee! A kernel panic and Call_trace finaly.

Well OK. I can't get a kernel >4.0 to boot succesfully on this machine and no one had a succesful clue in months (at least on how to make that useful for e.g. the kernel). Mean I can't run a decent GNU/Linux on this tiny machine that used to run just well. Sounds EOL for Linux on it. Feel uneasy, but wouln'd feel better going on testing more kernels for zaro fruits to anyone. Life says move on.

Note that Linux mainline 4.5rc7 have the system hangs like with the other 4.1+ kernels.
I don't want to stay running linux 4.0.7 until the sky falls on my head. Will get OpenMediaVault or Rockstor NAS OS installed (keeping only the kissest) and delete Arch + Fedora from this netbook they can't support. Hopefully will go on making a good job as a small NAS device.
Note: a bit of a strange feeling after six years running Arch on it.

Yeah, I hope not many hardware are affected by such upstream issue. Also while boxes are similar, your crystal's BIOS is a year newer than my Dell's (latest available). And there are some other diffs: Mobo, RAM (DDR2), CPU release, Ethernet card, DRI framework, init.

We have an Acer lappy too (Aspire One A0751h-52Bk "Poulsbo"). Made a NAS, using OpenMediaVault stable (Debian Wheezy). Had no issue running kernels >4 on it.
Talking about energy I played a bit with Arch Linux's powersaving features on the Dell; got it back to the battery life it had six years ago at 5-6 hours :-) Now where the Dell really shines is its transportability: fits anywhere incl. a hand and I often turn in back thinking I forgot it somewhere, to realize it's already in my backpack.
PS: That's a pretty big swap partition you made. I find the Mint RAM usage a bit high. Is it stock XFCE or it had some app running?

It hardly ever uses swap, i just did the "old school" 1.5X RAM
When i switch it to arch i will fix that
(It sits in a box on my desk)
PS the RAM usage is stock mint XFCE

Ah OK, thanks.
Asked about the RAM as antiX MX (Debian Stable with some antiX magic and XFCE desktop) takes 90 MiB upon boot. Installed it last week on a neighboring lady's AMD 3000 1 GB RAM. Over 200 MiB seems a bit heavy IMO.
The old "1.5X RAM" is, errr, old We can even hibernate with swap size << total RAM size. E.g. the Acer netbook here hibernates fine with 0.7 gig swap and 2 gig RAM. And my desktop with a 2 gig swapfile and 4 gig RAM.

I was waiting for the 4.6 kernel to be in the stable repository as I have a Dell inpsirion mini 1011. This little machine did what you just said: hang at boot, starting from kernel 4..
So, yesterday I installed a brand new system, with 4.6-2. Everything seemed fine, until I rebooted. At this point, I had my fingers crossed, but this had no use: the system hang at boot.
What solved my problem, is the this: systemd.restore_state=0 kernel parameter.
I only have sketchy ideas what was going on, but if I am not mistaken, the system sets the state of the backlight before shutting down, and at the next boot, tries to read it back. This is where everything bad happens.
I also don't know, if this will solve your problems too, or this was just a local problem of mine.

Well, originally it's not mine, so it had a windows 7. Needless to say, it was horribly sloooooooooow. So I decided to install arch.. That's where all the problems started End of the day, we (my girlfriend and I) did not use it, although I managed to install android something on it. (Don't remember which version, but definitely had a 3.x kernel). As it was not a big pain in my ass, I waited for someone to fix the issue. After your post about the 4.6 kernel, I decided to give it another try. That day went with a lot of google...

Thanks for all the info. That is a lot of debuging. Where do i add this as a kernel parameter? Will I need to do this every time I get a kernel update?
